GPSD Battery Drain on cell Network

There is a thread created under Cell C but I am on MTN and wanted to know if this is related.

Battery app shows that GPSD is using the power, 40% or higher. Battery barely lasts 5 hours.
I have tried all possible solution mentioned on websites and here. I suspected that it happened after a 4.2.2 firmware upgrade a week ago.

Anyone else also experiencing this on Samsung S4?

See Cell C thread below as well:

Yes I experienced that it started on Tuesday see my post here

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...sue-on-Gs4?p=14161891&viewfull=1#post14161891

And for some reason it seems its gone, by end of yesterday gpsd was no longer topping my battery drain list and is completely off the battery usage list though i am still using my phone on 3G ( some posts suggest forcing 2G). Common factor is the network provider MTN, and i last did a firmware upgrade ages ago to 4.4.2

Thanks.

I have changed to 2G and now after 3 hours the battery has not decreased. This solution works for me for now. I will monitor it. If I read all the other posts it looks like it is just not only MTN but other network operators also.

I am going to try and report it to MTN, I just hope the call centre agent understands what I am explaining.

I'm on vodacrap and I still suffer from this problem. 2G does help. And of course, vodascum says there is nothing wrong with their network.

For those that swap to 2G and still get battery drain, try rebooting your phone. It's the only method that works for me.

The problem is background apps that call home whilly nilly, causing the power-hungry HSPA/LTE chip to never wind down into suspend. I suggest vanilla Cyanogen rom with no GApps or other oem bloatware, or just disable mobile data when you're not using it.

I have to disagree. I use a custom rom that is minimal by design. I have no apps relating to GPS and I still get battery drain when using 3G. It's only 2G that stops the GPSD from going crazy.

Custom rom does not necessarily mean Cyanogenmod - it could mean a stripped Samsung rom, which is what most custom roms are.

If your phone is older than a year, you may as well flash Cyanogenmod on it. I prefer it.

I hear what you're saying Bud and I did try many roms, which included CyanogenMod. I'm not a fan of the CyanogenMod interface though, I prefer Touchwiz (shock horror).

2G does have one advantage, it uses a lot less battery, I get 2-3 days from my phone and this is with a lot of phone calls (30mins per day). 2G is more than enough for WhatsApp and Email syncing. Not ideal for browsing but that's what WiFi is for.

With Cellc we got to their network guys and they identified a report they implemented, which only seem to have affected Samsung phones, causing a drain on the battery. Its a type of measurement report. You need to get to their network guys, but try explaining this through their call centre.....fail....
