Hi All,

I recently upgraded CPU, Mobo and RAM.

So system is:

Intel G31 Link
Intel Q8200
Samsung HDD Link
2GB RAM
Biostar 8600GT
Samsung 2494HS (Resolution 1920 x 1080)

How much of a limiting factor is the GPU? I can't afford to spend a lot of money at the moment, had to get the upgrade as my existing system was 3 years old. But if the GPU is making the rest of the upgrade obsolete, I'll have to make a plan.

Company of Heroes gets 21 fps on average. Not too great I think :)

PS: Comment on the motherboard would also be appreciated.

Very limiting on a full HD screen.

Minimum I would look at is an HD4670 at around R1000, maybe even look for the 1GB version which should help with the higher resolution. ;)

Ati or Nvidia? How true is all the stuff about (AMD + Ati) and (Pentium + Nvidia)?

Any combination will be good. No need for "partnering" them.

ATI are making very good price/performance cards. If you'd prefer to go Nvidia then look for a 9600GT at around R1300.

Also depends on your budget...

Yeah. With graphics cards it always depends on budget.

8800GT vs 9600GT? I guess I'm always looking at Nvidia cause I'm comfortable with it from previous experience - I never owned an ATI. Maybe it is time to make a change.

Yeah, I'm registered on Prophecy with the same nick ;)

Having a look at Warpity's 8800GT as we speak.

The logic that is preventing me is as follows:

I upgraded specificlly for Diablo 3. I'll be playing Company of Heroes for a bit now, maybe another 2 - 3 months. So I could wait till then and get the same card for cheaper, or get a better card for the same amount of money.

Intel motherboards are not cool, too many failures in my lifetime. Prefer Gigabyte or Asus.

9600GT is cool, overclock well too. A 8800GT will be slightly better but use more power and generate more heat (older architecture). ATI is delivering bang for buck these days.

GPU will make a big differance to your gaming.

You could. Or you could just sell the 8800GT after a couple of months. I don't think it'll depreciate that much as it's still a very popular card.

How much of a difference does a motherboard make? Especially considering that I don't intend overclocking anything. I had some heat issues and think the board is partially responsible. But got a TX2 to sort out that problem. CPU is nice and cool and it definately helps with air circulation in the case.

None. It's just a reliabilty & features thing. (Although the G31s are all basically featureless)

I also just ordered a TX2, will be here tomorrow with my new MB.

Blizzard already stated a while back that diablo3 will support dx10.1. I'd definitely recommend the 4670. It goes for around R800 at prophecy. A 1gig card won't make a difference in this case.

A hd4850 is going for 1.5k now...And with dx10.1!
That would make ur pc complete.
Ur fps should be 4 times or more with that card im company of heros from 21fps.

The 8800Gt 512mb is a good card, but not for HD 1920X1080, you will never play crysis nicely with that. Once you play in higher resolutions you really have to up the GPU. The overall performance though is good, but if you really want to see the full effect of your Samsung you got to go big... GTX 260 or bigger !

One thing for sure, if you clock that CPU up to 3.0ghz, you will see a big improvement ! Doubt you will get much higher than that, maybe 3.2ghz, but you dont want to risk frying a new chip.

If you want to game you need a gaming GPU. There is no way around it. You just have to set a price target and aim for something inside it. Skimping just means you won't be able to play games - simple as that really. Look at the 4770/4850/gts250 as a baseline if you want some degree of future proofing.
