Hi...

I am in the market for a GPU for a i5 2400.
Old PC, don't want to upgrade as yet.

I did some Google research, most of what I find is for a 1060 or 1050 TI. These are abit pricy

Looking for something under r1k.

Any recommendations?

You're looking at the wrong time, GPU prices skyrocketed.

under R1k... I'd personally attach some hopes and dreams to it.. you are not going to get a GTX 1060 for R1k or thereabouts hahaha. Save up some cash for a few months and then look for a second hand card.

If you are wanting a 1060 for mining, well then you're gonna look at around R30 a day give or take.

What's the gpu for?
Games for the youngster.

I upgrade memory to 12gm
Added ssd
So the performance did pick up.

But certain games want a card. It is complaining about gtx not enough.
I believe this is because in the Gen 2, the memory allocation does not get split for graphics.

Do you think I can get something cheaper that would be compatible and usable... Maybe a 210 or 220

Oh hell no
210 is no better than gen intel HD 2000 on the i5 chip and only good for HDMI output if your mobo doesn't have one.
710 is about R1000 and support Direct X 12 but also not much better. (See passmark comparrisons)

For that budget you better off looking at secondhand and even then I don't think you will get much unless you strike it lucky.

Edit: Updated comparison to include on chip gpu

Youngster is about 1 years old

Dont need anything hardcore, as long as it can open and play fortnite

I am thinking of this one

I just don't want to but it and then it is not compatible
Or it is, but still doenst open fortnite

Fortnight min requires a HD 4000

The minimum specs you'll need:

  • Windows 7/8/10 64-bit + Mac OSX Sierra
  • Core i3 2.4 GHz processor
  • 4GB of system RAM
  • Intel HD 4000 video card

As Per Passmark
HD 400= 332
Nvidia 710 = 637

So in theory it should be able to run it on minimum specs, how playable that is only you will be able to judge.

Nice little upgrade to the i5, hate to see it paired with a GT710, it is absolute garbage, rather wait a bit if you can or save up and atleast get the 1030 for double the price, the GT710 is not worth any money in my books.

12GB RAM ? I assume this is something like 1 x 8GB + 1 x 4GB. Keep in mind single channel memory configs can cause a significant bottleneck in some games and Fortnite is among some of them.
