So long story short I have an RTX2080. It's a pretty decent GPU still except for the power v performance ratio which is quite bad but it still performs.

About 8 months ago I started having an issue where it overheats and the card protection kicks in where it thermal throttles and the fan speeds max at 100% even on light GPU loads. When exploring hotspot temps are like 115C while the core temp is like 80C.

Anyways replaced the paste and all the memory pads and all was well. Under load 65C max temp even on fan speed of like 30 -35%. Then again one day same issue again.

Opened it again and repasted it and it works fine. 2 months later same issue.

I suspect the issue is the actual paste but I used multiple brands but getting the same issue. It looks like after like 2 to 3 months the paste melted and it's like a sticky clear glue. Attached pictures. What do you guys think is the issue? GPU getting too hot or just bad paste? I tried 3 brands now.

Too much paste, it should never be off like that.
The thing about thermal paste is, less is more. You need like a bead to cover that.

Check this out on takealot: Thermal Pads For GPU / Motherboards / Laptops / 0.5mm - 10cm x 10cm
This might work better

Thermal pads are not a replacement for applications where thermal paste should be used.1751472866656.png

Which pastes have you used? I'd recommend high end pastes for GPU, stuff like Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut, Corsair XTM 70 or the old Cooler Master Gel Maker if you can find it.

Also slightly too much paste, use this :

And don't overtighten.

Wdf gaan hier aan. Less is more

Unless you have an RX Vega  You have to, since the die isn't level with the HBM modules, and most coolers don't compensate.

Nowadays, on any other GPU, I simply use ID-Cooling Frost PTM-2 pads. BTW, these don't work on a Vega GPU; even with the right mounting and heating method, it gets pumped out almost instantaneously. I have never seen a GPU destroy a pad like this, but it must be due to the cooler being uneven on the die. You have to dump it on there.

For those who want to know what paste to use, Igor's Lab has a chart:

I have managed to get Kooling Monster KOLD-01 (EU version), and it works great. Otherwise, I use Arctic MX-6, which isn't too expensive, or Corsair XTM70, which is expensive.

I have a bucket with pastes. From Thermal Grizzly to Cooler Master, and Halnziye which I use on electronics in DIY things.

The only pads I buy are the Arctic ones. I have some pads here that I don't know where they were made, but they are good.

Seems you're really pushing the GPU to it's limits for a long duration.

I'd say improve the airflow in your case and configure the fan below the GPU on a more aggressive curve.

That looks like bad airflow causing overheating - causing paste to get worn out quickly.
And what do you base any of that bs on, Aghori?

Yes I think the last time I did it I definitely added too much. The main issue is the paste that remains on the chip looks like it melts away?

The over pasting is an issue as it overflows and looks bad but shouldn't' be the cause of overheating?

What are those strips on the sides.

Point taken.

Anyways Cavedog is not even interested in my genuinely helpful posts. Will delete 'em.

I'm taking all advise because to be honest I'm getting tired of this card now. As a very last resort I will send to someone to paste and if it happens again bin it.

The paste covering those electronics, capacitors etc are all bad too

Ahh okay yeah. Maybe they are making the heatsink not to properly seat on the chip. Will have a look now while I have the GPU out.
Alcohol rub. Then a tooth brush. Clean all that away
