Hi, I'm looking for a GPU in the R1500 range. It needs to be able to play newer games, but I'm not too fazed with it being the best on the market. I used to have a HD6870 that was absolutely amazing and would gladly have gotten another of those if not for the fact that it seems to have been discontinued.

Any suggestions? I know this is a very limited budget for a GPU, but I game at 1600x900 and I don't play that many high-performance games anyway nowadays.

AMD Radeon R7 260X is what you should be looking at but it's around R1800. A friend of mine purchased one from Evetech and he runs Battlefield 4 on high settings on a Tri-core AMD system with 4gb of RAM that's not overclocked.

I've got a 600w PSU, so it should be sufficient. After this upgrade I don't intend to upgrade for a while so it should hold me for a few more years.

And I run it also on high with my GTX 460, what does that tell you?

If you still have the HD6870, there's no point in upgrading for that price. However, if you really want to, the R7 260X is the way to go.

DX12 and Mantle support too :)

a) Not available.
b) Not future proof.
c) Driver support is at it's end.
d) No DX12 support.

Nvidia has announced that it is going to be dropping driver support for a large number of its old graphics cards, including essentially the entire 8-series, 9-series, 100-series, 200-series, 300-series, and one card (the GeForce 405) from its 400-series. This includes mobile and desktop products. Support for a number of professional workstation products is also being terminated.

Nvidia said it will support DirectX 12 on all the DirectX 11-class GPUs it has shipped; these belong to the Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell architectural families.

The 400 series uses the Fermi architectural, get your facts straight.

Unfortunately the HD6870 died on me last year, together with my motherboard and PSU. I initially thought it was just the PSU and replaced it with a pretty decent one, but it turned out to be all three those components in the end.

It was a very sad day. The HD6870 was an amazing card.

Sad days..

What are the specs of your PC ATM?

At the moment I don't have a desktop PC. I'm still planning the upgrade but I'm trying not to go over R5000, which is proving very difficult.

I'm looking at a i5 3340 with 4GB RAM (RAM can easily be upgraded later, so I don't have to buy too much initially). The CPU is skirting the low end of the i5 line, but for my purposes I don't need much better than that, especially because I don't plan to overclock.

Go with a H81 Mobo + 4gb DDR3 1600mhz RAM + i5 4440. Should set you back about R3800-R4000. The latest Core i5 Haswell CPU's are more than adequate for gaming.

I use an H61 + 8gb DDR3 1333mhz + i5 2400 and it's going well for 2 years now. Not once have I had the system shutdown whilst gaming.

Yes. That H81, 4GB, i5 is a great option on a tight low budget. It all depends on what you want in the end, what you have currently, and what your total budget is for the entire rig.
