GPU Value Comparisons

So the latest AdoredTV talks about Vega64 outperforming the 1080ti because AMD makes better use of a CPU bottlenecked system in comparison to Nvidia.
I'm sure that if the bottleneck wasn't there, the 1080ti would outperform it in the tests that was performed in the video. But this also means that you have to buy an expensive CPU to reduce that bottleneck.

So for the average user, there is no point in buying Coffeelake or a Threadripper just to gain a few frames over the other, due to the expense of a top end card and a top end cpu.

Just remember that it was an unusual case.

At that resolution, the CPU is usually the limiting factor. The GPU is not really being strained. At least, RX Vega and a 1080Ti are not strained at 1080p.

So, it is strange RX Vega to be performing well in CPU bottlenecked situations and I don't think anyone really knows what that means. It could be that Nvidia has driver issues in DX12 which are leading to higher CPU overhead than AMD.

Yeah, I guess that what I am trying to add to this is that one can take advantage of the lesser card since it performs so well under the circumstances. Most people will be bottle-necked if they don't have a top end CPU, but the majority of people won't buy a top end CPU. Do you see a point in buying a 1080ti when playing at that resolution knowing that you will be bottlenecked, because you won't have that best CPU?

I plan on playing games at 2k res (with settings on full) on my 4k TV, and since both these cards deliver above 60fps, there is no point in going for the 1080ti right?

At 2k resolution you really do not need a 1080Ti or Vega 64. You would be fine with a 580, 1070 or 1080.

If you do plan to play at 4K in the future, then buy a 1080Ti.

If you are comfortable with undervolting and overclocking a GPU, then you could consider buying Vega, but, I would still wait for third party RX Vega cards to come out. Third party cards will have better coolers, which will run cooler and quieter. I would not buy Vega at all until the third party cards come out, and even then, only if you are happy fiddling in order to get the best out of it. And, you have to accept the possibility that you would pay as much for Vega 64 as for a 1080Ti and it might never be as fast.

Buying any Vega is essentially a gamble - it might pay off but it might not.

Hi all,

So sadly my AMD R9 270 2GB has given up the ghost after a good(?) nearly 4 years.
So I'm on the hunt for a new GPU, I've got my eye on the GTX 1050 ti 4GB. I've read it can play modern games at low/medium settings and I'm going for the 4GB card as I've read that gives it some future proofing and also I've read its better than the AMD alternative (560?).

In regards to my pc spec I have an i5-4440, (it shouldn't bottleneck the gpu?) and 8GB 1600MHz RAM.
I hope all the above information is correct as I'm no expert and getting information on the various GPU's can be confusing.

I've got a couple questions regarding which 4GB 1050 ti I should buy and differences between them. So far I've seen Evetech have some of the better prices regarding GPU's and I've narrowed down the options to:

MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti OC 4GB: R 2,699
MSI GTX 1050 Ti Aero 4GB OC: R 2,899 (small dude)
MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X 4GB: R 3,399

So I've got a few questions if people wouldn't mind helping me:
1. How big is the difference in performance between them? for me 'future proofing' is of the most concern as apposed to graphics quality but for another R200-R700 I wouldn't say no to being able push low-medium-high in some games.
2. Quieter and cooler is better (is that mutually exclusive?)
3. Am I just wrong on all fronts and should I get something totally different or the 2GB card?

On a side note: I forget exactly who it was that helped me with the PC build I am now getting a new GPU for (it may have been on mygaming) but I'd just like to say that people like that are doing Gods work and up til now I haven't had one issue with my PC and have derived so much joy and pleasure from it. So Thank you and others for helping!

It makes no sense to buy a more expensive 1050Ti - they only difference comes down to thermals and noise but if you're buying a 1050Ti you probably care most about cost before any of those things as well as the fact that card doesn't generate all that much heat to begin with.

If you want a 1050Ti then get one as cheaply as possible otherwise look for a better card if you're willing to spend more.

Thanks very much for the reply and advise will get the cheapest one then :)

1. So small you won't notice it. A 1050ti offers no future proofing unfortunately.

2. Go for a dual fan card, they have much better coolers than single fan cards.

3. Maybe but I'll address that below :D

In that list of cards you mentioned above there is one for R3400 so it must form part of your budget considerations? If I told you that yes spending R3.4k would get you much better performance (let's just pretend for a second it's true) would you buy it? Price wise you're not far off from gtx 1060 territory.

So if you can stretch your budget a bit and would like to spoil yourself for xmas consider,

If you have a friend with access to rectron you can get a Gigabyte GTX 1060 WindForce OC 3GB (GV-N1060WF2OC-3GD) for R3780
The takealot card will have free delivery and you can use your ebucks / discovery miles... and see if you can get a voucher here https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/563837-Takealot-Vouchers-Thread

Disclaimer: I always recommend going for a 6GB 1060 over the 3GB version if your budget allows for it, that said I would take a 3GB 1060 over a 1050ti any day of the week.

Hi Ponder,

Thanks for taking the time to write an informative and thoughtful response, I may go with the 1060 then since you are right it is within my budget although I did want to try squeeze an SSD in as well, so I'm basically getting as much advice as possible before black friday/cyber monday so that I know what want and can grab good deals quickly ;)

I think my R9 270 could have lasted longer although I have a suspicion my cat/younger brother may have spilled something through the case onto it (when I took it out it was looking grimy/rusted).
Taking a look at price the 6GB 1060's I've seen come to R5,000 compared to the 3GB which in the link you kindly posted is R3,700 if I could pick your brain, Why would you recommend the 6GB over 3GB? for better future proofing?

Feel free to PM me the response if you prefer but maybe some others would also benefit from your advise if you reply here :)

Thanks again

The difference is not only VRAM, the 3GB version also has less shaders, 1280 vs 1152. Memory wise there are already games that can tax the 3GB card and this can be alleviated by turning one or two settings down but games will just get more demanding in future so the 6GB card makes a lot more sense.

Get a SSD from Ravi over on Carbonite, http://carbonite.co.za/showthread.php?179419-Sata-ssds-(256gb-1tb) ;)

Thanks ponder,

Alot to think about I'm hoping black Friday will be kind to me otherwise I'll definitely be using the links you provided.
