GPU Value Comparisons

HD5850CF scales at around 70%, whereas HD68xx scales closer to 85%. But with 5850's probably going for quite cheap second hand, the value side of things is obviously quite different. But average fps in CF its 82 (5850) vs 85 (6850).

GTX460 scales at 75% (768mb version) or 89% (1gb version)

Checking the charts actually made me doubt getting a HD7970, but I dont think I can justify water blocks for two "old" gen cards so the single new one is still the winner for me :D

Ok, HD7950 reviews are out. Looking good so far, I will integrate them into the charts over the next. Plenty of OC room in them as well, from what little I've seen you're pretty much gauranteed 7970 performance, and in a couple of games you can get around 5% more. Price is justifiably high right now, its faster than a GTX580, but a bit cheaper still. I'd say prices will only drop around March/April when Kepler is expected to launch

I want to get a value card (< R1k dealer cost ex VAT). I have a few options. some things that trouble me:

1) DDR3 vs DDR5 - there seems to be a lot of value cards that use DDR3. How much does this effect performance? For example, I can get a Saphire HD6750 with 1GB DDR3 ram for about R700.
2) 6750 - 6770 - 6670 - 6570 - Any decent comparisons that take RAM into account? I can get a 6670 with 1GB DDR5 ram for the same price as a 6750 with DDR3 RAM.
3) Minimum amount of RAM required.

I just play the odd game, WOW and a few others but pretty much have wow set on basic settings with my on board card.

I normally prefer to get ASUS although they seem to be much more expensive than Saphire on the GFX card side.

Sapphire HD6450 , recommendations? alternatives?

Hi Guys,

I am now running dual hd led 24inch dell screens and my onboard graphics card cant have dvi and hdmi output as they share the signal.

So I have to buy a graphics card.

How's this one fair up? Can get for R633 from Bios Online. Thats around my budget.

Sapphire HD6450 2G DDR3 PCI-E HDMI/DVI-D/VGA 625MHz/667MHz 64-bit 1 slot
passive

Thanks,

Roscoe

My current motherboard is
MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 Micro ATX Integrated Desktop Motherboard - Retail

I just found an Asus HD 6850 for R1613 (incl VAT, excl shipping) !
http://www.wootware.co.za/asus-radeon-hd6850-1gb-gddr-5-pci-e-desktop-graphics-card.html

According to the value comparisons, you'll get the same performance with 2 of those than 1x HD7970, at like 1/3 of the cost :D

@Roscoe,
What motherboard do you have?

You can get a much cheaper graphics card that can run 2 digital screens!
eg Gigabyte GT210 http://www.takealot.com/electronics...cs-card-gt210-512mb-64bit-gddr2-pci-e,5391559 for R326 (incl VAT & shipping)

That is VERY tempting... Thanks

Charts updated with HD77xx and HD78xx cards. Pricing on the 78xx is speculative at this point
Pricing looks whack, until you realise that there is no competition. For example, the HD7870 comes within 5% of a GTX580, but costs a good $125 less, which to us will be around R1300-1400. Looking at those two cards in particular we can see why HD79xx cards are priced the way they are right now. Lets hope the green team has some decent stuff coming out to drive prices to more reasonable levels. I just hope that Nvidia price aggressively instead of reactively. In other words, Nvidia must not price their cards even higher when they launch, they should instead launch at "low" prices, forcing AMD to drop prices. Whether or not this will be the case, I cant tell
But in the current market situation, R1400 less for just about GTX580 performance... pricing looks good, cards look good. All in all, its all good (right now)

It surely cannot be possible that CF 6850 is better value than a single card? It would have to scale better than 100%?

I will finish up GTX680 additions tomorrow/over the weekend, because I'd like to add in HD7xxx crossfire numbers as well if I get the time, I've been putting it off far too long.

For now I'll just say the GTX680 is going to shake things up. Its around 7-8% faster, and 10% cheaper. AMD, its your move.

Man AMD really missed the boat by not making a 75 watt card... the 7770 was almost there at 80watts. I would love to have seen the best achieveable performance without an extra power connector.

Work was way too busy today so I did not get to any of the crossfire setups :/
GTX680 is in there though, and man, that value chart is way out of whack now. GTX680 has certainly shaken things up, making both the HD7970 and HD7950 obsolete at their current prices.

I'll expect AMD to lower prices when the rest of Kepler release.

I just came across this incredibly cheap Gigabyte HD 7770 OC card: http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20&products_id=5395 @ R1580 (incl VAT, excl shipping) !
It performed roughly the same as the HD6850: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/HD_7770_OC/26.html

@Archer:
Could you perhaps swap the Value for Money graph from Rand/FPS to FPS/Rand?
Because at this moment it is actually difficult to distinguish between the best value for money options, but you can distinguish very well between the poor options ;)

Secondly, could you please add the actual values of each bar, in text right next to the bar? So that we don't have to guess what the bar's value represents?

I havent found a way to add the numbers to each bar in google docs :/ If I could figure out how to embed the real chart (instead of just an image of it) then you'd be able to see the numbers, but I haven't found how to do that either

Then the value chart, you want something like this rather (higher is better):
