Grabit on News Servers?

Hi to all.

This is my first post but I have been to the forum daily for about a year now to get my forum fix!

I must say that this is the best SA forum by far and the first stop for anyone browsing on local cap.

I'm new to the whole news server scene and have read that some members get download speeds of up to 400kb/s on a 384kb/s line.

Currently using Grabit with SAIX.news.

Is there something better than Grabit to give me better speeds or do I have to up my line to 512?

No if you want 400kb/s you are gonna ave to upgrade to a 4mb line.

Applications dont give you a faster speed, those guys are probably talking about the frequent download spikes they get which could be a glitch in Grabit or Telkom doing something

Can someone please explain differences between kB/s, KB/s, kb/s and kbps because it looks like I'm downloading between 200kbps and 330kbps according to DU Meter but Grabit reports a download speed of 20KB/s to 30KB/s.

So 30 KB/s is the same as 300 kb/s and 300kbps.

Almost, it's simply KB = 8 x kb. So 30KB/s should technically be 240Kb/s, I'm sure it's just timing differences, and DU meter is measuring all traffic on your line.

kb/s is what they use for line speeds for some reason while download speeds are generally in KB/s seeing as your store data in KB on your computer.

Oh kb/s and kbps are the same thing. The p is for "per" second, you can just use a slash instead.

What app is recommend for downloading from saix.news. Using Grabit, but are there better apps out there?

You can try alt.binz or nzbget (which is only a console app).

If the NZB files aren't cached on the local news servers, you won't get your full line speed either, unless you're on 384kbps ADSL.
