Cape Town – Zimbabwe opposition parties have reportedly slammed First Lady Grace Mugabe over her love for an "extravagant" life after it emerged last week that she had purchase a diamond ring worth $1.4m through a Lebanese dealer Jamal Ahmed.

Grace made headlines on Friday, with reports saying that the deal came to light after she demanded a refund, which she allegedly wanted paid to her in Dubai.

The diamond ring had been meant to be President Robert Mugabe's wedding anniversary present to her.

The year 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the Mugabes' wedding.

Following the botched deal, Ahmed had dragged the first lady to court, accusing her of occupying three of his properties in Zimbabwe.

He also claimed that he had received threats from Grace and her son Russell Goreraza. Grace's security personnel, Kennedy Fero, was also said to be implicated, the Independent newspaper reported.

"Insatiable appetite for vanity"

According to New Zimbabwe.com, the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) reportedly said that it was important for Grace to know that Zimbabweans were watching her.

"This is gluttonous politics surpassing the evil of biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. Her (Grace's) insatiable appetite for vanity is only comparable to Fedinand Marcos’s wife. She should however, be warned that the people are watching," the PDP was quoted as saying.

The MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai also weighed in: "Honestly how can somebody buy a ring that is worth $1.4m when people are dying in hospitals because there are no drugs, kids are unable to go to school because they are hungry."

The MDC said this was the "most disgusting and shocking" ring "to be bought by any human being".

Meanwhile, a News Day editorial piece also laid into Grace, saying it was shocking that Mugabe, who had over the years been described as "humble" and as the "poorest president in the world" by the first lady, was willing to splurge $1.4m on a diamond ring for his wife.

"While Mugabe has every right to buy his wife a 20-year wedding ring, we find it shattering that the president can choose to be this extravagant when the country is in such an economic mess," read part of the editorial article.

Summons issued for Grace Mugabe in $1.4m diamond ring shame

Johannesburg – Security personnel at State House in Harare have thus far refused to receive a summons for First Lady Grace Mugabe in a case brought against her at the Harare High Court in connection with an $1.4m (R18m) diamond ring she allegedly bought from Dubai last year.

Jamal Hamed, a Dubai diamond dealer, claims that Grace paid him from her Zimbabwe account at the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe, CBZ, for a rough diamond which he polished and had set. He claims he then sent it to her but says she refused to accept delivery and allegedly demanded a full refund to her bank in Dubai.

Hamed says he tried to negotiate with her as costs were involved in polishing and setting the diamond and claimed any refund, by instalments, would have to be made to her Harare bank account because of foreign currency regulations.

He said that in October, three of his valuable properties in Harare were taken over by Stanley Goreraza, Mugabe’s eldest son from her first marriage, and her bodyguard, Kennedy Fero. In the process, Hamed said, his workers who lived on the properties became homeless, including a school child about to write examinations.

Several commercial vehicles

Hamed’s lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, sought an urgent application to force Mugabe, her son and bodyguard to return the properties.

Another attempt was set to be made to serve summons for an urgent application in the High Court on Grace Mugabe at State House later on Thursday.

Although President Robert Mugabe, 92 is immune from prosecution while in office, his wife Grace does not have that privilege.

I would take Zuma over Mugabe any day. Both evil, but at least Zuma has been incompetent in piecing together his dictatorship.

In his defence, Zuma faces more obstacles than Mugabe did, but Zuma is gradually destroying the foundations of democracy.

Easy in a world where somebody who owns multiple luxury homes, one of which cost $60 million, gets appointed special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.....

Diamond ring shame: Zim judge orders Grace Mugabe to return seized property

Harare - A Harare judge has ordered Zimbabwe's controversial First Lady Grace Mugabe to return three properties that she seized from a Lebanese businessman in a botched US$1.35m diamond ring deal.

High Court judge Clement Phiri on Wednesday ordered President Robert Mugabe's wife to remove her representatives from the properties that she seized after Lebanese national Jamal Ahmed failed to repay the money that was paid by her for a polished diamond ring.

The ring had been meant to be Mugabe’s wedding anniversary to Grace.

The year 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the Mugabes’ wedding.

Grace demanded a refund after she discovered that the diamond ring was polished.

When the court initially sat on Wednesday, the First Lady was not represented but attorney Wilson Manase later stood for her.

'Grace is not new to controversy'

In passing judgement, the judge expressed unhappiness on the sheriff's failure to serve court papers at the Blue Roof residence of the First Lady in the leafy Borrowdale suburb of Harare.

Ahmed's lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa said security personnel at Mugabe's residence denied the sheriff to leave summons and he could not affix them to the gate or door in fear of breaching security protocol.

Said Mtetwa: "He (the sheriff) had failed to serve the summons because of an armed soldier who barred him from further action. We were in the middle of the hearing when the presiding judge was called by the Judge President (George Chiweshe) and came back later and then granted an order compelling the First Lady to remove her representatives from the properties and to ensure that all workers at the properties who had lost their jobs were immediately reinstated."

Grace is not new to controversy. At the height of the land reform, she grabbed a farm in Mazowe, about 30km north of the capital Harare. She later turned into an orphanage. More recently, the First Lady also grabbed another farm, Manzou, located in the same district that ruling Zanu-PF party insiders say she wants to turn into an animal sanctuary, rendering several families, mostly women and children, homeless.

Diamond ring shame: Grace Mugabe is 'loveless', syas Catholic priest

Cape Town – A Zimbabwean priest has reportedly labelled First Lady Grace Mugabe "loveless" for "acquiring" a $1.35m diamond ring "at a time when Zimbabweans were going hungry".

According to New Zimbabwe.com, Roman Catholic priest, Father Rungano of St Johns Parish said this while speaking at a funeral service for a Zimbabwean woman who collapsed while on her way from South Africa.

"There is a lot of corruption in this country and if people had love for each other, we would not be seeing someone buying a ring worth millions whilst the nation is hungry," Father Rungano was quoted as saying.

The priest's remarks came just a few days after the controversial First Lady was ordered by a Harare judge to return three properties that she seized from a Lebanese businessman in a botched $1.35m diamond ring deal.

The ring had been meant to be President Robert Mugabe's wedding anniversary gift to Grace.

The year 2016 marked the 20 th anniversary of the Mugabes' wedding.

Grace reportedly refused to take delivery of the diamond after it had been polished, and instead demanded a "full refund".

Diamond ring shame: Grace Mugabe 'defies' court order

Cape Town – Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe has reportedly defied a High Court order to return three properties she seized from a Lebanese businessman Jamal Ahmed in a botched $1.35m diamond ring deal.

According to News Day, Grace defied the court order and remained in occupation of the three houses in Harare's affluent Avondale suburb.

President Robert Mugabe's wife allegedly seized the properties after Ahmed failed to repay the money that she had paid for the polished diamond ring.

The ring had been meant to be Mugabe’s wedding anniversary gift to Grace. The year 2016 marked the 20 th anniversary of the Mugabes' wedding.

Grace allegedly made the payment through a local commercial bank, but declined to accept the ring on delivery before demanding that the refund be deposited in her private Dubai bank account.

'Threatened with harm'

But, Ahmed, according to court papers, said it would take long to effect the refund, as he had used a third party for the transaction, to which Grace objected and proceeded to seize the properties.

Ahmed also said in the court documents: "I have been threatened with harm if I return [to Zimbabwe] and it is necessary that I get some of protection.

Quoting Ahmed's lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, the report said that Grace had "not yet removed her proxies from the properties, in defiance of an eviction order issued by High Court judge, Justice Clement Phiri on December 21 last year".

Mtetwa said they had now approached the Deputy Sheriff of the High Court to evict Grace’s proxies from the properties.

Justice Phiri had given Grace's proxies 24 hours to vacate the premises, failure to which, the sheriff would be authorised to evict them and restore the properties to Ahmed.
