Those who have played this game on another platform won’t find much new. A more robust multiplayer functionality has been built into the PC version, as well as the ability to record and edit footage to show off exploits on the streets of Liberty City. Other than that, it’s the same game played with different hardware. If you haven’t played it yet, you should – it shows a brilliant amount of progression within the series, and makes big promises for its future.
It has taken Rockstar a while to release a PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA IV in short), and with good reason: it is a massive, open-ended playground for the player, with an intricate and detailed story matched by a detailed setting. Much can go wrong with a PC version of a game with this much scope, and if the online forums are to be believed, GTA IV has more than its fair share of issues. Still, it is a thoroughly enjoyable game despite any technical glitches.
The sheer size and complexity of this title demands a powerful machine. One peek at the required system specs will tell anyone with even just a modicum of knowledge that this one will suck your PC dry, unless you’re running a very beefy setup. Even then, GTA IV will put your rig through its paces.
The story is that of Niko Bellic, an illegal immigrant who makes his way from Eastern Europe to the fictional American city made famous by the GTA series, Liberty City. This fictional version of New York becomes the player’s stomping ground, in terms of both criminal activities and social ones. This game is about more than hijacking cars and causing as much mayhem as possible – it is a story, guided by the player, about a man who desperately wants to make a better life for himself and will do whatever it takes to make this dream come true. So while there is a good amount of violent, criminal behaviour depicted in the game, the player can also partake in more mundane activities – like going on dates and playing darts with friends. GTA IV has many possibilities and activities, and is more of a ‘lifesimulator’ than a virtual crime spree.
