This card is a few years old now. It's still a great card though, which is why I transferred it into my overclocked Haswell i7 build not so long ago.

But it's now developed glitches. A minute or so after I start pretty much any game, some frames are glitchy, then more and more until the whole machine crashes with a glitched screen (vertical bars only).

I just tried cleaning out the heatsinks; did quite a good job and it's definitely running cooler, but the symptoms are still there. I've re-seated the board several times.

PSU is a 550W, and has worked fine in this combo for months, so I don't think it's that.

Any ideas?

Check the Voltage regulator temps with GPU-Z. I've lost one 5870 to a borked fan and bought a used 5850 which since had a fan failure as well (fixed with a specialist bearing grease)

Make sure that it is the graphics card, try the game with the on-board graphics for a bit.

Timber_MG: thanks for the feedback. I took a screenshot, but no point uploading. Max temp 60.9. Not overheating. This was at the start of glitchy behaviour in ksp. I didn't see Vreg values in gpu-z; how do I get there?

Good advice. I haven't tried this yet. I'm pretty sure it's the gfx card, but I'll give the onboard a go.

The Vertical Bars used to happen to me until I disabled the AMD High Definition Audio Device. Also disabled the other audio devices not in use.
