Hi all,

My 7600GT has been giving hassles almost since day 1.

It was tolerable so I made do.

Now it's on the brink of death.

I am writing this using the onboard graphics chip and an ancient CRT monitor because my monitor is DVI-only.

My GT is now quite old, but it let me do most of what I wanted to do.

What can I look at (and from where) that will suffice for most things but will not cost me a month's salary? I'm seeing cards for many thousands and it's scaring the bejesus out of me! :o

I will consider a used card.

I have access (through work) to one or two distributors too.

Thanks,

Nic

You can pick up a GT430 for around R850-retail. You will get a frame rate of about 35 fps in Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 at 1600x 1200 res
OR
You can pick up an ATI Radeon 5770 for around R850 and you'll be getting around 47 frames at the same settings

I'd go for the 5770 as it gives better value for money.

What is your budget?

For a decent gaming experience, don't go anything smaller than a 560Ti

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I don't too much gaming, but when I do it's along the lines of NFS or GTA...

I haven't purchased hardware in ages, so I'm very rusty this this stuff. I know this is a chance to get a DX-11 / HD card, but at the time same I'm not yet running a DX-11-compliant OS. Yet.

Possibly a daft Q., but do I need an HD monitor too? I'm not sure if mine is.

I've had a look at our one distributor's pricelist and the array of options is bewildering, to say the least. Another thread in this sub-form recommended the Sapphire HD6870. That's in their list...

They also show the 560Ti, but that's well over 2.5k and I'm not sure I'd like to near as much as that.

I tend not to upgrade often, so what's likely to keep me covered for the foreseeable future?

Budget? I'm not sure. Let's say an absolute max' of 2k (seeing as how this was unplanned), but anything under would be a real nice bonus.

6770/5770 is probably more than you need. Can be found for about R1300 at retail prices.

I had everything set as high as it would go with the 7600GT, but I realise it and my games are a couple of years old now.

I don't think my Samsung 19" monitor supports that reso. Haha.

Thanks.
