Graphics card - help needed

Hey Keeper, so you given up smoking yet? ;)

Yeah, I see talk of Esquire specials but I had a peek at their site and it seems to be dealers only. Do they have a MyBB account? Also I see talk of the specials not being valid in Durban and that is where I am... how do I solve that issue? Online purchase? Cheers

MyBB members can buy under the account #MYB001.

Esquire infomed us that they made the specials available to all their branches.

It's a good time to be a mybb member :p

just wait, ok?

So do we have dealer status? Cool. What's the password?

Thoughts on the ATI Radeon HD4650 512mb.
Too old?
Fsck - think it's along the same lines as my current 8500GT isn't it?

Rather maximise your budget. The 9600GT annihilates the 9400GT.

Yeah, cool I hear what you are saying. But also after reading on Tom's hardware a number of posters there seem to say that Ati whips Nvidia when it comes to similarly priced gaming graphics cards. Is this true?

Guys, on TomsHardware, if you were only going to look at one graphics card comparison chart which one would it be? Bearing in mind my needs are for gaming (ie Spore, NFS etc).

There are too many and I have no idea which one to use for my needs! ha ha

Link to the chart?

OK, I am getting closer to a decision but now for some more advice from the technical guys out there....

I have realised the PC only has 512Mb Ram which I have decided needs upgrading to 1Gb too, so for this reason I have decided to probably go with the HD4650 card from Esquire at R499.

I am lead to believe this does not need it's own power supply, but I have checked out the system requirements and it recommends a 400 Watt or greater power supply... now the problem is I just checked my son's computer and it only has a 300 Watt power supply. Does this mean the graphics card will not work?

Will I now need to upgrade RAM, power supply and graphics card?

I would test it. A PSU with 300 Watt can be as good as a PSU with 500W it just depends on how mutch Voltage and Amps the PSU can offer. If the HD4650 will not need extra Power you'll be ok with the 300 Watt since the PCI-E bus will deliver 75W (max) to the GFX.

Thanks Gixxa. I suppose I can buy it and test it and if it does not work I can upgrade the PSU.

As a matter of interest, what would happen if the power supply is not "big" enough? Would the computer shut off, graphics card not work or what?

Nothing from ATI comes close to a 9600GT @ R999 retail.
