Graphics card - help needed

The only slight concern is that ATi recommends at least a 400W power supply whereas the one I have fitted is a 300W. I am thinking it might be OK though as the rest of the system is pretty basic. Just a DVD optical drive, some basic speakers and that is about it. No fancy frills. An LCD monitor too but am I correct in assuming this does not actually draw power from the PSU?

Use the calc. ;) 300watt will be plenty.

Only old LCDs plug into PSUs I think.

OK, I seem to have found the solution needed, with extra special thanks to Esquire!

I am getting the Powercolor HD4670 1Gb graphics card. So those who were kind enough to talk me up from the 4650, well done! ;)

I have to admit this solution is as a result of the help of Esquire in meeting my needs. If you guys haven't used them, from all accounts a lot have, then don't hesitate to use them. They appear to be more than willing to go out of their way to help you. I do not have the actual card in my hands yet as it is being couriered from Midrand to the Durban shop for me, but the service thus far has been great.

So I'll be sure to give some feedback once I get my hands on this baby.

Hmmm while waiting for the call that my 4670 has arrived, I have been doing a little more research.... at first this set my mind at ease as it was continually confirmed that this card uses very little power so I was happy that my 300W PSU would be sufficient.

HOWEVER, I went and inspected the components of the computer a little closer to check 100% on that calculator. It was then that I discovered the computer actually had a Pentium D 3Ghz processor. Now I am lead to believe that the Pentium D uses a lot more power than the dual cores (just to clarify, by that U mean Core Duo and Core 2 Duo)!

I also found out that the, and let me try to use the jargon properly here, amps per 12V rail on the PSU are important. The amps are 15A @ 12V. Now another site seemed to state that this would give you a more accurate figure of the PSU wattage ie 15x12=180W.

Now using the calculator with the Pentium D and the HD4670 gives me a figure required of 250W! So do I have an issue or will some of the other components like the DVD etc get their power from "another rail"? Forgive me if this jargon is not 100% correct :) What is the true power output of this PSU?

Well just a little bit of feedback... got the HD4670 card today along with an extra 1Gb of DDR 400 RAM.

Plugged them both in and everything is running 100%! Things are looking real good and a lot quicker too. Played a bit of NFSMW and Spore on highest resolutions available and running smooth and looks real good! Even gave SIMS 3 a bit of a run and all good there too.

So anyone finding this thread who only has a 300W power supply, and a similar spec PC to this one, then it'll be absolutely fine with the HD4670 plugged in (even though ATi recommend a minimum of 400W).

Glad you came right :)
