Hello guys, I'v been having a little bit of problems with my MSI ATi 4890 Cyclone. Let the pictures show you:

Firstly, this is a picture of my PC setup with the old Inno3D 8800GTS 512:

My CPU was overclocked to 2.99GHz (332x9)

Second picture, the ATi 4890 is installed and I'm unable to overclock due to my 12v rail being pulled too far down (reads a 11.61v in BIOS with optimized default settings)

I was worried about my PSU not giving enough power, so I returned to the shop where I purchased the 4890 and asked around about the power issue. The shop then sent the card back to the suppliers so that they can do their testing on it. The suppliers phoned back after a day of testing my 2D graphics, 3D graphics and memory and telling me the card is 100%.

Eventually I was pointed to the supplier and allowed to show him my problem. After a while I knew I wasn't going to succeed in testing another 4890 to confirm that my GPU is possibly faulty, so I packed up all my things and collected my 4890 back from the suppliers.

Sadly, the next picture shows that my 4890 has now degraded performance compared to previous tests ran:

When I saw the results I attempted to install Vista64 again, but with even worse results:

This all happened from Wednesday to Friday, should I send this card back again to the suppliers ?

Any input will be appreciated,
Roobir

Are you sure you've got all drivers correctly installed and up to date? I had the exact same issue where I installed W7 and when I ran Vantage, my score dropped over 3k points because of driver problems. I was running 2 4870's in Xfire.

I put Vista back on and my score shot up to what it use to be. I highly doubt it's your card.

I used "9-11_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe" on both operating systems. The first score was on win7 with 10k gpu then it dropped to 8.4k in win7 and 7.7k in vista. :(

I never had graphic card driver problems, I had Motherboard driver issues. :/ I did a fresh install, installed motherboard drivers first, restarted, installed graphic card drivers next, restarted.

All worked then. Make sure you have the right W7 Motherboard drivers.

Could it be because of the temperature? See the max after a Vantage stress test is 115degrees.. I think thats a bit too high.

forget about using vantage to test theoretical speeds.. not real world performance.. make sure u have the latest driver from AMD / ATI's website, unplug everything from pc that could be using power.. extra hard drives, cd rom drives, external drives etc etc etc.. so ur just booting with essentials to get pc into windows. Uninstall all previous drivers, restart.. let windows detect and use its own driver.. then install the latest driver u dl'ed.. restart again.. play game / run benchmark

Post full system spec and PSU model... Maybe its a power issue.

I noticed the following which may be contributing toward those decreases although i am not entirely convinced it is the main cause.

A.) windows aero is still enabled on the lowest vantage test as can be seen by the transparent windows and taskbar. This would significantly impact on performance.

b.) the cpu multiplier was reduced to 6x... while this could just be automatic stepping after the pc had become idle it may have actually happened during the 3d tests, but run at full multiplier during the CPU tests and could explain lower 3d test scores. I have on rare occasions seen computers that adjust CPU speed etc at the most innappropriate times. Check power settings and make sure the system is set to the power user profile and not any form of energy saving. Also check for similar settings in the GPU department.

c.) Heat is Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high... 115 c is dang hot, even for a 4800 based GPU IMO, but then i can be a stickler for low temps.

PC Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (G0)
Gigabyte P35 DS3L
CoolerMaster ExtremePower 650W (product# RP-650-PCAR)
2x2GB DDR2 1066 Corsair Dominator
MSI ATi HD4890 Cyclone
Asus Xonar D1
3x Blue LED fans
1x WD 250G 7200rpm
1x Samsung 500G 5400rpm
1x Samsung DVD-Writer
All SATA

I've tested a 900Watt and 1000Watt PSU at a local PC Shop, they all start with a 11.6v when entering BIOS to see the temps and voltages. Also I'm using 9.11 CCC from the ATi website and the newest Intel P35 drivers I can find.

I think it might be heat-related, as the Vantage test runs at about 34fps then it kind of slows down very shortly then goes back to 34fps.. sorta jerking forward. Could it be the GPU clocks down a bit when it reaches temps as high as 115c (See the pic with highest temperature measured) ?

Thanks for the input guys, its appreciated.

fk me bru, you're lucky that gfx card still exists. they should never go higher than 100C and even that's pushing it. by the looks of it, your entire system is hotter than it should be and probably best to invest some money is decent coolers.

Take the cooler off and re-apply the thermal paste. I read somewhere earlier on Overclock.net of a guy whose card was overheating(4670), he reapplied and it ran like a champ again.

I got my box back from Pinnacle yesterday, but my HD4890 still idles around 65-70c. We identified the problem to be my motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3L. Will a new motherboard with PCIE2 slot result in lower temperatures ?
