I am looking at getting an Intel Core 2 Duo and need advice on which graphics card to get with it? I am looking for something with decent gaming performance for around R1500, although I am prepared to spend a bit more if it will make a big difference.

Also, between ATI and NVidia, which, if any is currently considered better at the moment?

Cheers,
Russell.

Hmm around R1500 you're stuck with an ATI HD2600XT or Nvidia 8600GT/GTS. You might want to get an older generation card like the X1950Pro or 7900GT (possibly second hand), those are still good cards, better price/performance than the new DX10 midrange.

Or, wait for the new ATI HD2900Pro card, should be around R2500 and great value. If you're willing to spend R3000, get a 8800GTS now, definitely worth it for the price, but it's double what you're looking at right now.

If you're buying retail, and for prices between R1500 to R2000, I would go for ATI Radeon X1950 PRO which has been rated on par with the card that I currently have which is the GeForce 7900GT. You can currently get it at Take2 for about R1700.

Many people (including myself probably) would advise you to save a little and buy the GeForce 8800GTS 320MB at about R3000, but I know that many people are not in a position to justify that expense.

BTW: I haven't upgraded yet as I waiting to see what's going to happen with the next generation of graphics cards and my 7900 is still good enough.

Thanks for all the advice, think I'll probably go the 8800 GTS route. :)

Haha, ja I read yours and noticed it was basically the same thing.

Russell, listen to killa, stealing money for hardware is always justified.
