i have a Sapphire HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 Graphics Card. at idle temps it runs at around 50 degrees, when playing games, it goes to about 60 degrees. the ambient temperature is around 28 degrees. are these temps normal and acceptable? have tried improving the air flow in my rig, but nothing seems to make any difference. i am using speedfan to get the temps

case? do you OC it?

currently running a 7970 and have about the same temps, but to help I have a huge external fan blowing onto my side panel intake.

however my gpu fan is also basically permanently on 50% (well changes with a custom MSI Afterburner profile)

the case is a coolermaster haf x 932. i did think about getting a desktop fan and having it blow onto my pc. think it might help?

so do you OC?

personally I think those temps for that ambient is definitely within parameters.

my ambient is also insanely hot where I am.

I won't say it is a bad idea, but if your flow in the case is good and you do get cool/cooler air to at least go into the case, I don't see it as a problem.

unfortunately, I have not seen many temp posts on 7950's or 7970's to guarantee you 100%.

but I am sure some1 will give you a more definite reply soon enough.

for me and my card, that kind of temp is definitely good.

also, what speed your gpu fan on?

i do not overclock it, don't see any need. at 50 degrees, the fan is running at 54%. much higher and it sound like the pc is going to take off!

same here.

though for me temps are more important so don't mind the noise.

take it you have 1 front intake, 1 side panel intake?

top and back exhaust?

yes, front and side are intake, back and top are exhaust. did try that internal fan thins for the graphics card. actually made it hotter!

60 Degrees and you are worried?

My 460 hits ~81C on some games.

Your temps are fine but if you are still unsure open your Catalyst Control Center and adjust the fan speed.

I would switch the front fan to blow out as well. If it's blowing right onto the card, it's most likely blowing hot air back into the gpu. At least, that's what happened with my old 590... reversed it & the temps dropped by 15/20C

That is pretty darn hot for a single GTX460!

My 2x MSI GTX460 Cyclone 1GB OC cards are hitting like 78'C & 85'C respectively when I overclock them to 850MHz @ 1.025V and this is just because my ambient temperatures are like 30'C or perhaps even higher :(

@simonbee:
22'C above ambient during idle sounds quite excessive, but it is probably still OK. Like have a look at the review here: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/xfx_sapphire_hd7950_3gb/15.htm

Perhaps you should run monitoring utilities (like MSI Afterburner) to monitor the GPU usage and GPU speeds during the times that you think it is idling.

Could you also post the clock speed & voltage here during the idle state?

clock speed is 810Mhz, voltage seems to be .95 (does not show anything in afterburner)
