Hi Guys,

I am starting E-Sports at a local school in my area and need some advise on graphics cards. The school has given me 10 x Entry level dual core's to use while we start up the sport and see the reaction. If the uptake is great then they will budget for new PC's for mid next year. But for now I am stuck with the DC's.

I have R8000 to use to buy graphics cards for these 10 PC's. 10 x R800. Can anyone recommend a GPU under R800 that would do the job for now. Mainly for Counter Strike: GO , Dota2 etc.

I am considering the MSI NVidia GT630 or the Sapphire ATI HD6450. Any advise would appreciated!

Have you considered second hand? Just look at gumtree / junk mail. a quick look shows you can get a Nvidia GTS 450, Nvidia 550Ti ,Radeon 4870, Radeon R7 250 for around R800
All of these would be a marked improvement over the above cards.

Problem is he needs 10. It'll be difficult getting 10 exact same cards second hand and in an eSports environment you probably don't want someone to have an unfair advantage...

Try and get a discount sponsorship from a supplier!! Get some pic's of the classroom and pc..

Bang for buck I'd go for either of these cards:

The second is r200 over your budget but you're really scraping trying to find an R800 gpu at all, and if you can negotiate that additional r2k there's a lot of added performance there (more than double the GT630's frames) plus a free game.

You shouldn't consider the 6450 or 630 to be gaming cards in any real sense. And if you want some longevity with this e-sports thing you also don't want to sit with a situation where you need to upgrade all the cards in another year.

Also.... if you go secondhand, look for something like GTX460 or HD5850. But on Gumtree or Carb or wherever, those cheaper cards get snapped up so you need to be quite aggressive if you want to get 10x. Maybe put an ad on Carbonite asking for exactly what you want. Maybe someone will be able to help you.

Thanks all for the posts!

Cerebus / Sokum, you have motivated me to go and knock on some doors to get more sponsorships. I think an extra R2000 will be well worth it as pointed out. As for the games, I am waiting on MSSA to reply on the official league games played, but if memory serves me right CS:GO is what I we will be playing most. Until we get better PC's BF4 etc wont be an option.

Thanks again guys, greatly appreciated

Why bother with Bf4?
CS:GO is the e-sports game of choice.

Just keep the graphics settings to medium/low and you'll get a good fps in game.

Why not try and start whit Rebeltech and tell them what you got and what you need maybe you can work some sort of deal out maye even have them get the contract to build the new PC's if the Esports thing takes off.

Some games rely on the graphics card, others the CPU. The original CSS liked a good CPU.

Not CS:GO though.
I played it on on board graphics for a while when my gpu stuffed out.
Then again I do have an i5 2500k so it's hardly an entry level dual core.
But with the gpu it will make a big difference.

Pretty sure you can still get 9600 cards? They should be pretty cheap and can run just about anything nicely. Obviously not the best but for R 800 I'm sure you can get a few pretty cheapish.

Saw 5 of them on Gumtree alone for around R 500 - R 600
