Hi All

I need some help please. I have an circa 2005 p4 pc and want to upgrade the graphics card. The mother board is an Asrock 775S61 and the current gpu is a geforce 6600gt. I bought the new star wars unleashed pc game but my card is to slow :(

Is there a better card for that mbo.

Would a geforce 9600gt work?

I buy on line and before I do I want you guys advice.

I don't want to buy a card that is not compatible with the board.

Upgrading the mbo is not an option atm

Thanks in advance

You are in a bit of a difficult position if you want to play games with that setup. AGP cards are expensive and you'll only be spending good money on bad hardware. I would advise against that route.

You will have to buy a new PC. I'm sorry there isn't a single magic bullet component upgrade path. Everything will bottleneck something. It's dangerous to game on an old weak PSU. A modest complete PC upgrade will cost you around 2k 2ndhand if you play it wisely.

I have a 500W psu and 3.0 cpu ..is there any card that will work better on my mbo, that will allow better game play . Will a Geforce 8 series work?

try an AGP 3850 but they're very rare and expensive esp for the performance you get.

Yep - get a cheap motherboard & dual-core CPU - I've got an ATI 4850 which I am trying to sell FYI.

That would be fine - sure why not. That's a decent option. Then you could save for a dual core cpu. Yeah good point.

cerebus,don't you think he can use his CPU on a G31 mobo coupled with 2 x 1gig ddr2 800mhz sticks?will it bottleneck?

I think that's a good suggestion for the OP.

G31 mobo - R500
2 x 1Gb DDR2 RAM - R300?
Decent PCI-Express GPU - R800

That's R1600, still cheaper than buying a brand new better specc'ed AGP GPU from the prices I've seen. He could possibly sell his current mobo and RAM to reduce his overall cost.

Thanks seems my trusty old pc is ready for the bin then. I was hoping some gpu was out there that would work. So basically even a geforce 8 is out of the question then :(

To answer your query simply, no the 8 series will not work. The last AGP range was the 7 series.

Man...what people have shown you is an affordable upgrade path. Sell the current mobo/ram for say r300, plump out an extra 200 for a board, get some ram and a PCI-E card and you're set. It is definitely not worth it to buy a new AGP card.
