I was recently inform that the graphics card (5870) for my upcoming rig is hardly available anymore. I can either get the 5850 or probably or get the Gigabyte 5870 but I doubt it as it is already to much over my budget. The GTX 295 is way more expensive than the 5870. I just want to know how is the 5850 in terms of performance drop compared to the 5870?

Look they are both awesome cards (5850, 5870).
The 5870 is definitely better, but it is also more costly. The Gigabyte cards are ridiculously overpriced and I am yet to establish why.
You can get the 5870 if you shop around, they are not that scarce I don't think. Personally I can't find a 5850.
Try PC International for the 5870.
