I have an Asus 8800gt in my machine. According to its software (Smart Doctor) the card starts running at 45deg then rapidly hits 68 deg at idle .

I was playing Dragon Age yesterday when the card hit 100deg then kicked me out of the game along with loud beeps (alarm). Settings on the software seem in order and the fan is running but noisy

What now? I assume it's a cooling issue - do I change the software or get additional cooling? If cooling what and where? The case has two large fans directly behind the card - one extracting and the other blowing air in

I know this is now being blamed for just about every gpu issue, but you don't maybe have that rogue driver installed? I think 196.75. That apparently buggered gpu's and caused overheating.

You might have to clean your heat sink and fan from any dust. Failing that you can even remove the fan and heat sink, remove the old heat sink paste and add new paste.

I like to test gpu's with this software.

It will crash your gpu within 5 min's if there is a problem. I would suggest to run this, along with your temperature monitoring software and your case open. Check that your fan is running the whole time while the test is conducted. A software setting or an electronic error might cause it to stop. You might think of increasing your fan speed as well. Normally they are set to run at about 40%.

edit: Maybe just remove and reseat the card? is there a possibility that it does not get enough power? Maybe check PSU?

Does the Asus Smart Doctor program allow you to increase the fan speed? If it does then try set it to max when you are gaming, see if that helps.

About your cooling fans, is the one fan directly above the other in the case?

[ O ] <-- Blowing in
[ O ] <-- Extracting

Because having one blow in and the other extract sounds counter productive to me.

Already at 100%

Maybe look into some aftermarket cooling solutions then, but before that take a look at the cooling of your case. Is it offering sufficient cooling? Are the other components also running very hot?

Is buying a new gfx card out of the question?

Remove fan/heatsink and old thermal paste. Try applying new thermal paste like AS5.

my 8600gt did the same back in the day. i attached a heatsink on the back of the card that drew alot of heat away . and it worked !! also clean the fans ........... play with your case open and see if that helps

uninstall asus smartdoctor as that proggy screws up alot of things with windows in general ..my ati card wouldnt boot up , and after updating smartdoctor it made it worse ! lol ! just use rivatuner instead .

Uninstalled Smart Doctor and running Rivatuner. Same thing happens. Have also tried cleaning out dust (of which there was a surprising amount :o) but this doesn't seem to make a difference

Will try the after market cooling as none of my other components are running hot and have used the same case for two years now. Any suggestions as I really don't want to buy a new card now :(
