What is better, two cards (SLI or Crossfire) or 1 with more memory?

Single cards are usually a lot more hassle free than sli and CF, recently released games often have CF/Sli issues (more so with CF) where one card isn't utilised properly, this usually gets sorted out with patches and driver updates. Sli and CF are usually better value for money though, check out this Thread for more info...

should have posted in the hardware section btw

So what do you define as better?
  • More fps in games?
  • More Mhash/s for bitcoin mining?
  • Less/More Heat? (It is winter :p)
  • Less/More Noise? (You might like falling asleep to the sound of fans?)
  • 3D Capability? (But I think AMD has this as well now.. so..)
  • More screen support eyefinity etc..?

What res you running at?
More memory helps with higher res and having a higher x for AA and AF

The best value right now is two 6970's crossfired. Should set you back about 5k if you got a good supplier or the 6990 but at 7k the 6970's will be cheaper but then again the 6990 does offer 4gb memory.

two 6970's will be easier on the ears as well

It's an Alienware box that I'm trying to configure. Yes I know they're overpriced... Aurora.

In that case, it seems money isn't a problem. ;)

If you ware going to game @ 1920x1080, get at least a card with 1GB of ram. SLI or XFire faster, depending on which cards you are talking about.

Eish you wasting money on alienware for what reason exactly? Anyways seeing as though money is no object to you get a 6990 or nvidia 590 :D

Crossfire a 6990, i can how ever tell you amd will be releasing the 7990 in jan and it looks to be insane.

I get it massively discounted...

dual 450 or 590, must go for the 590 but the price difference is incredible. You can get 2 x 450's for like 2k and the 590 will be like 7k.
