So I decided to upgrade to 1024 DSL from 512K.

Walked into my local Telkom office on Monday morning and requested the change and by Wednesday morning my router was reporting that it was done.

Well done :D  .

I did an application for adsl on two existing lines 10 days ago, IT"S ACTUALLY DONE!!!

Beleive it or not, activated and the whole works.:D

I applied for the upgrade - telkom said they couldnt do it without coming to my premises and testing my line - I cancelled the order. A few days later I noticed they'd done the upgrade anyway.

Tried it for a few days - thought to myself - this is nice. But not an extra r200 per month nice so cancelled and didnt have to pay the downgrade fee.

how is the performance difference? as much as twice as fast?

Does not affect browsing but usefull when pulling down big files using concurrent connections via ftp or hhtp and serving more than one PC.

TibbyDude - That was definitely NOT Great Service!

No Dissing Intended, but If you'd walk into Telkom and request the upgrade in the morning and it was done in the afternoon, now that would be great service!

They have just serviced their client, nothing more. After all, you pay for the service.

But, I can see how extatic you were/are seeing your request fulfilled in days rather that weeks/months.

Indeed :).

good service

ordered adsl from telkom wednesday. thursday they call to confirm installtion date. Monday afternoon adsl working.

Called Tuesday at 9am to upgrade to 1024k, got back home at about 2pm, modem reported speed has been adjusted. now download at about 100kb/s

pretty darn good.

:D

Well , as much as I dont like giving them credit - I must admit that is "pretty darn good".
Now can they do something about the pricing too?

Agreed - all they need do is flip a switch. Just because two days was better than their normal dismal approach to customer service, does not make it "great service".

well compare what you get with a 1024k adsl, and what you get with a 56k modem . i'd say its comparing a citigolf 1.3 with a merc amg ? should cost more.

but ja would be nice if it can be cheaper, and maby faster. but then they would improve it less as they would make less money.

One fault with the analogy, is that your citigolf 1.3 can do as much mileage as you like, but the merc is only good for short trips to the supermarket.

Agreed, but I would like my Merc to compare a little better with international pricing and not pay 1000 000 for a merc I can get for 250 000 in other coutries.

i dont agree. how many people with 56k modem's download more than 3gb per month? and if they do how much that cost them? propably more than the adsl would, unless they really put effort in and do the R8 call thing and stick to after hours, you dont need to worry about "wait for 7pm" with adsl. i can see someone over the sea in perfect video and sound with skype over adsl, not with 56k modem.

also it is in northern suburbs.
