so 4.1 will be jailbroken on sun but if u are already on ios 4.1 theres no unlock yet, those that want to upgrade to 4.1 without updating the baseband can do so

Is this allowed on the forum? It is a form of hacking?

Yeah. It's a form of hacking. It's not illegal although it's unsupported by Apple.

Federal regulators lifted a cloud of uncertainty when they announced it was lawful to hack or “jailbreak” an iPhone, declaring Monday there was “no basis for copyright law to assist Apple in protecting its restrictive business model.”

Jailbreaking is hacking the phone’s OS to allow consumers to run any app on the phone they choose, including applications not authorized by Apple.

in south africa it is illegal for mtn, vodacom etc to lock handsets

Explain 'baseband' please.
Does the hardware version make any difference to what you can and cannot do?

correct

Baseband is the "Phone" part of the firmware - the part that gets locked to network carriers.

So if you have a iPhone imported from the States (where they are all locked to AT&T,) you need to jailbreak the firmware as well as unlock the baseband.

This is why US-imported phone owners are advised NOT to upgrade to iOS4.1 as this upgrades the baseband firmware which closes the holes needed to unlock.

I heard it only works on new iPhone 4, new iPod touch 4G, and iPad. iPhone 3GS will require a diff exploit?

No, works on all devices.

Not true.
Please remember that SHAtter and greenpoison are /only/ possible on the fourth-gen devices: iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4G.

MuscleNerd: SHAtter doesn't apply to iPhone3GS (or iPod touch 3G). New owners of those should wait for future @comex JB
