Grinder saves man from robbers

Nelspruit - Mpumalanga business owner Carlos Chauke said he had no choice but to defend himself from knife-wielding attackers using the only weapon he had, an angle grinder.

Magistrate Bertus Le Roux agreed with him and found Chauke not guilty of killing Timothy Magagula, 45, in the Nelspruit regional court on Wednesday.

Magagula and two other men attacked 33-year-old Chauke after he had just opened his metal workshop in KaNyamazane on November 6, 2007.

Chauke was preparing to cut a piece of metal with the angle grinder when he felt a stabbing pain in his back.

Holding grinder when attacked

He turned around and was confronted by the knife-wielding attackers.

"They kicked me and I fell to the ground. I was still holding the angle grinder," said Chauke.

Desperate to save his life, Chauke stood up and thrust the grinder at his attackers, cutting one of them across the chest. The injured attacker and the third man rany away, leaving Chauke and Magagula to face off against each other.

Chauke said Magagula rushed at him, stabbing his hand, and he retaliated by throwing the grinder at him.

Magagula fell to the ground, sustaining wounds to the head and arm.

Went to police

Chauke ran to the wall and turned the grinder off before heading for the police station to report the crime.

When police arrived, Magagula was already dead. Chauke was rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital and treated for stab wounds to the back, hands and stomach.

Chauke could not believe he survived the attack.

"I wasn't supposed to die that day. It was God's will that they didn't kill me," he said. Le Roux said: "You were lucky to have survived. If it was not for the grinder you might have died."
