Gamarra' s unwanted record
Carlos Gamarra’s misplaced header against England yesterday, , timed at three minutes, was the quickest own goal in FIFA World Cup™ history.

The previous fastest was scored by Yugoslavia’s Ivan Horvat, who netted an own goal in the 9th minute against Germany FR in 1954.

England have twice benefited from own goals in the competition, the first was scored for them by Josef Barmos of Czechoslovakia in 1982. But Italy have benefited most of all – four FIFA World Cup own goals have worked to their advantage.

The first ever FIFA World Cup own goal was scored by Switzerland’s Ernst Loertscher v Germany in 1938 while only one game in FIFA World Cup history has featured two own goals – the clash between Portugal and USA on 5 June 2002 with Jorge Costa and Jeff Agoos the luckless pair.

I've uploaded 'World Cup 2006 match charts.zip', which comprises 'World Cup 2006 Electronic Chart.xls' and 'World Cup Chart.xls'. NOTE: These .xls' require macro functionality ..and the latter doesn't seem to work in OOo (not that I care, but I opened 'em to see what all the fuss is about). Anyhow, the file's here .

Now y'all can get your fan-age on all nice and neat-like!

Fifa have confirmed that England's goal at the weekend will be credited to Paraguay captain Carlos Gamarra.
David Beckham had hoped to be awarded the goal as his free-kick looked to have been angling into the corner before it came off the head of Gamarra.

The Paraguayan stopper claimed after the game that his contact was minimal and that it did not change the direction of the ball.

Fifa's Technical Study Group have, though, now studied the goal and arrived at the conclusion that Gamarra was the inadvertent, and unfortunate, goalscorer.

Although the World Cup's governing body have claimed that they will be favouring the attacker in situations like this, they have on this occasion denied Beckham the strike he craved.

Fifa have said they will review all 'dubious' goals before delivering a verdict within 24 hours.
