GTA 4 - performance problems

Hi guys

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I just purchased myself a copy of GTA 4 for PC. The game won't allow me to increase some of my settings(graphics wise) - what causes this? and why? I have a 19 inch LCD, andthe game wont allow me to go over a resolution of 800x600 the game looks crap played on those settings + I am getting very bad FPS.

My PC specs

Core 2 duo 2.8ghz
Geforce 8800gt 512mb
3gig DDR2 RAM
500gig MAXTOR HDD (SATA)

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Been dying to play this.

Tried the latest update?

In any case, GT4 must be amongst the worst optimised games of all time.

Drivers?

Don't worry, even quad cores struggle running the game with a 512MB videocard.

Instructions to fix GTA4
Good stainless steel bin, mean jumpshot. If you mis the bin go up to the bin and dunk as violently as possible.

Trust me you'll thank me tomorrow...

It makes me sad and i didnt even waste my money on it..
But then again i bought spore! I'm so embarrassed. I'll probably never look at games the way i used to again...

Have you got the latest nvidia GFX drivers
I have the game running on my Aspire 8920 laptop runs g8! On the login screen a few weeks back it did mention something about a nvidia graphics driver update.

Well u have an Xbox, ull probably get better performance anyway so njoy

It runs gate? It must be running like a "gate" on a laptop, seeing as how its struggling on all those monster "gaming" PCs...

The xbox ain't that great.. I have it, and when you drive very fast, you can basically drive out of the rendering distance.. You can still see the roads etc, but may bump into objects that haven't been rendered yet.

Awesome game still... I'm enjoying it tons. Loved GTA since the first version was released with it's blue/green banshees and superspeed oil-tankers

The game wont let you increase your graphics if the increased settings will use a lot more ram than your gpu has. For instance - i have the same gpu and with my resolution 1680 x 1050 the game wont allow me to increase my texture settings above medium because it will use a lot more that the 512mb memory i have on my gpu. (look at the bottom of the screen in your graphics settings interface and you will see this)

Mines won't even go past the MINIMUM dude. And like I said the game plays at a horrible FPS. Oh well - gonna get it for Xbox anyway now the reason why I wanted it for PC - I have played all the previous GTA games on PC and I sorta got use to whole mouse and keyboard thing. Guess its time for a change

I had it on xbox and sold it before even finishing is 20%... Hated it! but got it again for pc - love'n it

There you'll find lots of different config setups, with all the different command switches that you can add etc in order to be able to increase certain graphic settings as well as other restrictions imposed by the game.
