I have a couple of GTX1080's some decent PC's, some Oculus CV1's , and a bunch of HTC Rift's at the office for an upcoming event. Can do a mini review of both if people are interested.

So far out of box experience the HTC craps all over the Oculus.
The HTC is a *far* better headset than the Oculus so far, having used both.

The Oculus was completely pain in the rear to setup.
Doesn't come with any disks. Need to download gig's of data from their sh*tty slow american server. Only took 7 hrs to download. Post install, the drivers for the XBOX One controller didnt' install correctly, so needed to futz about with Microsoft download catalog and download the XBOX One Controller drivers manually and install. You *have* to use IE to do that too.
And even more fun, the software tells me that the hardware doesn't meet requirements.
Why? Apparently the GTX1080 video card isn't good enough.
Uhuh.

The video in the Oculus is a bit smudgy too. Slight vertical lines in Oculus Home when you look around.
Have 2 sets, same in both, so its a hardware thing.
Lots of light leakage on the Oculus too under the nose.

The HTC doesn't have Oculus home so I can't check in that, but then again, it doesn't have that issue in games.

Will take some snapshots in a little bit and upload.

Ironically the better product costs less - the HTC is cheaper than the Oculus here where i'm situated.
If I had a preference, I wouldn't have bothered with the Oculus, but it was a requirement for the event.

"and a bunch of HTC Vive's..." *

and also... you lucky bastard.

Obviously havn't bothered to update the supported cards list, or your software is out of date.

In any case... This is exactly why a proper VR benchmark like Valve's is important. So that ratings are not reliant purely on a list of hardware models.

Edit: Oh on second read I see now you had to update the software, so its definitely their bad.

My software is out of date? Hahah.

You have to download it from the Oculus store to use the bloody hardware, so its *the latest*.
They just haven't updated it for the GTX1080...

Again, the quality levels between the two products are quite distinct. The HTC is a far more finished product.

Yeah I saw that when I read it again. Just skimmed the first time. It's really a poor showing from them considering that the 1080 is such big news a.t.m. They should be sitting on the edge of their seats for every new gfx card that might push sales of their own product.

Yeah, instead of fixing bugs like that, they're spending time making sure that their software doesn't work on the competitions equipment.

Priorities...

Would be better to grow the market, rather than create a betmax / vhs situation, *especially* when you have the crappier product.
The GTX1080 is a total beast btw.

Have to purchase a few different games now to test out. Sigh, work is hard today :)

I'll trade you for my DK1...
I might be slightly jealous.

Anyways don't forget to download the lab, they also recently updated it so that you can select any level with ease. The lava tube looks very realistic even on a dk1.

Skeet VR target shooting is pretty neat. It's also really small and you get to shoot stuff.

There's also this ikea demo, which is ideal in showing off a realistic house environment that you can interact with.

Blocks demo and lyra, you will require a leap motion though, but there is a sensation difference between using the controllers and leap.
I see the future as one hand with a controller in the other hand.

All free.

Since you got the VR early there's also a good chance you might have tilt-brush, that looks like it could be amazing. Oh you already tried that.

nice enjoy!

I'm travelling to the US on Tuesday and i'll be there for 2 weeks...was hoping to smuggle a Vive back home until i saw the size of the box. Do you reckon if I carry most of the components in my large carry on backpack (HMD, lighthouse boxes, controllers, wiring) and turf the unnecessary packaging, it should be manageable?

Clothes are overated.

yeah flying via amsterdam so my only concern with that is luggage theft and/or TSA going to town on my bag (especially JFK from what I've read), and since i'm flying direct into cape town, i always find the customs area crawling with guys - more often than not I have to open my luggage compared to customs in JHB.

The boxes for the Vive and the Oculus are *huge*. HTC's is a nicer box over the Oculus. If you lose the box, its way more manageable, and can easily fit in with clothes in a suitcase. That said, the box is nice as a carrying case for either unit.

Customs in Cape Town is particularly key on checking everything, especially if they can make some money on it, which is 99% of the time.
Our allowances of RMB5000 for are also pretty low in the real money scale of things ($330 odd). Duty will be 20% on top of amounts over that. You could have perhaps bought it off eBay for $300 secondhand, you will need to provide some sort of proof though, like an eBay printed page with a price of $3xx odd for example, if you wanted to minimise taxes due, not that I'm condoning anything..

That said, I'm not sure its really worth it though hardware-wise. VR isn't quite there yet. I have both Vive and Oculus, and both are interesting, but not OMG I must have's yet.

There are issues with motion sickness - the Oculus and the Rift are similar in that respect. Any game with fast motion graphics gives you nausea. InCell is one particular Oculus game that gave 100% of the people that tried it in the office almost immediate nausea after 1 minute of play.

Its early days yet, I'd suggest wait for v2 where the resolutions will get higher, and the wrinkles worked out, and the software a whole lot better.

If it gives motion sickness it's the game's fault.
Have you tried the Lab?

Weird thing is I'm on a DK1, and I don't get motion sickness at all anymore, they only time I feel slightly odd is when an image freezes.
Think I've developed what they call VR legs.
