Yeah you need to become more obscure cause you wouldn't want anyone getting it nearly right with the help of the wikipedia list of sports.

Played fives at school but I didnt shatter my knee until a few years ago so it wasnt a problem :)
 
Ok here goes.

Played individually timed against other individuals.
Equipment String and a ring made of steel.
Once was on tv, ESPN.
Participants must be barefoot. Other clothes are insignificant.
Smallish animals involved.

PS. No I dont do this sport but once saw it on tv. Thought that was the weirdest thing I've ever seen sport wise. So go ahead and guess. Doubt if you could google it. Will check so long.
