Guild Wars : Confessions

Hey there. Can anyone access http://www.guildwars.com (or, more importantly in my case, the official Wiki)? I keep getting 500 errors, my pings time out, and upon running a tracert, it gets stuck on a particular American IP.

Any suggestions?

edit: It appears that https://www.guildwars.com works. 0_o ...but not for the Wiki. :(

Are you using a proxy? Specifically the dsl-cache.saix.net proxy? Because the wiki doesn't like it at all.

so iDOL are you still a n00b being plagued by the Über veterans of GW ? :D

Hey, me having to start all over yep , noob again, cause me stopped playing for so long.

But I was well able to play and complete it, just don't seem to have enough motivation for games over the last bit.

Been playing dota on the war3 server to keep me occupied, but same ol same ol.

Nasty learning curves accusations of noobiness yet again.

I hate being a N00B :D

The SAIX proxy has a nasty habit of doing this.
It is transparent on the network, you don't even know about it... so not really anything you can do about it other than phoning them or your ISP to complain to them to fix it.
Or use another ISP that works ;)

Thanks. :P As of the end of December I started having regular connection errors too. (Code=007. Or alternatively I just get stuck "Connecting..." forever. This only ever happens when I'm switching areas, and only sometimes. GW support says I should check my router, but it was working fine for the first half of the NF campaign, and I went and forwarded the 80,6112 ports, just in case.) I've kind of given up on GW for a bit - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, given that lectures start again soon.

This Code=007 error is far too common to my liking. :(

The scenario you are describing is making me think it may be a problem with your gw.dat file. I have had this very same problem quite a few times.
I maintain several copies of my gw.dat to make sure I can replace it when needed.

Basically it appears to me like ANet store some game caching information in the gw.dat file as you play, which can get corrupted if your connection is unstable / laggy or if you switch between several different network connections, like ethernet, wifi, mobile, etc. while keeping your pc online.

I would suggest trying to reinstall GW on your pc (not uninstall, just a reinstall, it will do a replace of you gwsetup file and the GW launcher, gw.exe).
If this doesn't work, replace your gw.dat file with another recent copy or simply delete it out of the directory and the content will be downloaded again when you launch the game.

BEWARE THIS DELETION / DOWNLOAD OF THE GW.DAT - this uses your bandwidth cap, so only do it if you have a high / available cap.
You can download all the content in one shot by doing gw.exe -image in a command prompt in the GW directory. You cannot play the game while this download is taking place and it can take a while if you have a slow connection. There are literally 10's of 1000's of files that will be downloaded if doing it from scratch, coming to about 1.5GB-2Gb of data for all 3 chapters and expansion in a compressed form.

Thanks, I'll try that.

I bought the Complete Collection, so thankfully reinstalling isn't such a big deal. :P Even though I don't have a backup copy, the DVD's .dat file's likely only several months old.

Ok, good.
An easy check would be to check the size of your current gw.dat file and compare it to the one on the DVD's.
The difference in size should give you an idea of how much data it is going to download.

My gw.dat is closing in on 4GB and I have all 3 campaigns + eotn and I have traveled everywhere in the game. Data gets uncompressed in the .dat as you unlock / travel to an area.

O.o mines 6Gb, and i've got all 3 + gw:en... running around the Charr homelands last night I had to update.

Also recently got back into gw... I feel like iDOLboi, a noob again. I remember alot of prophecies and a bit of nightfall :(

Yes, I've heard of those big ones and the only explanation I have for it is that the data is very fragmented / spread out in the actual gw.dat, causing clusters of essentially empty 'white' space.
All the people I know have these 3-4GB sizes tho.

I do maintenance on my gw.dat regularly and full -image downloads, which streams all the data and content sequentially into the gw.dat, making it more neat and properly organised.
At least, it's my theory and I'm sticking to it. :P

I did get it from a friend who hasn't stopped GW since Prophecies came out, and hes been everywhere :p it may still have older maps that were updated over the years

It doesn't matter where he's been, as updates are released for areas he may have been to in the past but not recently :)
