Hi Gents,

Was just running a few tests on the Guildwars lag problem. The game uses two ports 80 (Telkom for obvious reasons cannot shape this port) and the key TCP 6112. When downloading game content Guildwars uses this port.

Telkom are shaping this port and hence the sudden drastic drop in performance.

Capping is one thing but prioritising ports for the price you pay borders on RIDICULOUS. I was about to purchase Guildwars online, but after testing the performance through 6112 ... have unfortunately changed my mind.

I have seen this in the last few days, I was getting gr8 performance, but now seldom get more that 4-5kb/sec on a 512 adsl connection...the game is now almost unplayable IMHO

I am with a Internet Solutions based ISP (Eastcoast Access) and I have no problems with guildwars.

which server you guys use, I have just finished playing and my world was loading at 46KB/s connected to european server.

I'm using mweb...seems that IS users do not have a problem. Connect to the European server.

What I guess you guys should do is go to http://games.saix.net forums and go to the Guild Wars forum under "Role-Playing other". Request if this port cannot be shaped.

If you think no-one will listen, you're mistaken. For Joint Ops (which connected to a intl. server) they opened a port for capped users and recentky they've done it for Battlefield 2.

Thanks Dominic, I'm still not sure if this is the case....most of my friends use Internet Solutions and they do not seem to have the problem. I have posted on saix's forums as well.

I have the same problem, descided to install Guildwars again today again. The last time I installed it the game updated at a smooth 25+kb/sec, now its only doing 1.5-2kb/sec

Using Web africa 30 gig saix account. 384

Authentication for games like JointOps / Battlefield 2 is far different to game content download prioritisation. One of the only reasons that SGS has been able to organise these other port prioritisations, is because the bandwidth usage is miniscule.

Its the same reason we tried our darndest to get a local Steam content server, as prioritising Steam updates internationally just wasn't an option.

I will propose this problem to Elyzium, see what he has to say, but I hate to admit that I personally don't think it'll happen. Worst we can do is try.

Thanks Vie, appreciate you taking the time to respond. Looking forward to a final word on this and then we can get on with making our own decisions on whether we want to continue playing Guild Wars on ADSL or permanently on VPN>

What about something like WoW? The bandwidth usage on that is almost a 10th of what BF2 is? Just like everyone in GW, gaming in WoW is a no go. Last night my pings reached almost 40k using a VPN to try log in. With my normal telkom account... Well I couldn't even get past the log in screen?

EDIT And I cant even log into the SAIX forums now either :(
