Hey guys

Been playing Guildwars since Dec without a problem, up till last few days...
Game just sits a loading screen, alternates between "Connecting to ArenaNet" and "Downloading 0kb (0kb/sec) 1 file remaining 0%";

Disabled software firewalls
Tried a different PC on my LAN
Verified ADSL routers firewall was allowing outgoing comms on ports 6112 and 80
Set up game systems IP as DMZ
Tried reinstalling from orig DVD (and risked having to re-download updates!)

Still no go...

netstat reports:

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks in advance

Haven't had any issues myself, also on SAIX. I hate to say "try again" but it may just have been a fluke.

Disable the DMZ, it's dangerous unless you have a local firewall and not necessary in the least.

How long have you left it trying to connect? Try running gw.exe -image .. no need to let it run all the way to the end, just close it if it seems to be downloading okay.

Thanks for the response

indeed, I have already disabled the DMZ, only use it for troubleshooting;

I tried the telkom proxy aswell, no change;

Also tried gw.exe -diag, all results completed correctly there;

gw.exe -image give the same problem, alternates between "Connecting to ArenaNet" and "Downloading 0kb (0kb/sec) 1 file remaining 0%";

Left it for about 15-20 minutes yesteday, same thing; dont really want to leave it unattended, in case it does actually connect and does a background download, hence capping me prematurely!

Any other ideas?

Got routesentry or any other funky routing going on?

Try tracert to the address that said Established in your earlier post, 206.127.145.19

Here's what I get:

Code:
C:\>tracert 206.127.145.19

This is a shaped account.

On this thread, there are people who had/are having a similair problem: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=71745
Maybe someone should mention the problem to Web Africa, incase it is something on their side. Perhaps you could try connecting with another account. Maybe a friends Telkom account or something, and see if it works. I use a telkom account, and have Web Africa as backup if I get capped. Maybe tonight at home I will try and connect with Web Africa, and see if I have any problems.

I actually think the problem is with your gw.dat file.
How big is it?
Have you got a backup from when it was working?
I would suggest doing a defrag on the file, if you can do files or do it on your whole system.
I have had many times where I had such problems and then my gw.dat was the problem. I know this because I would simply replace my gw.dat and the game would start working again.

You have to do defrags on the gw.dat file, especially if your system are oldish and you play a lot.

Alternatively, get a copy from somewhere / someone or download the content again.

I play on WebAfrica perfectly. Do you have shaped or unshaped?

rats...

Thanks for the help gents;

Have tried original gw.dat, no difference; will try the defrag, but I doubt it;

No routesentry etc etc running, its my gaming rig, so I keep it clean and uncluttered, games only!

Game has been running fine up till last week, just thought I'd reiterate...

Submitted a support ticket to WebAfrica, was told that no other problems were being reported, and no changes have been made recently... ie: bugger off buddy ;)

System specs are pretty high for this type of game, I think you'll agree,especially the harddisk subsystem, 10k Ultra320 SCSI harddisks on an Intel P4 3.4GHz system; so definately not a performance issue!

Got both a shaped and unshaped account, havent tried the shaped yet, ill try that and an account from another ISP next...

Drop a line to their support, i've found them helpful and responsive when i had issues connecting.

you guys are gonna love this...

Sorted it out, and if you can explain this, ill be very impressed:

Tried a clean install of GW on alternate machine, still wouldnt connect, so that eliminated a number of possible problems (specifically the games rig's firewalls and comms etc)

Directed attention to routers firewall config, all looked ok; (since it was working up to last week, and havent changed any of the routers config since then!)

decided to try reset router to factory settings:
- backed up router config to file
- reset router to factory settings; PRESTO, GW connects flawlessly!
- restore settings from file; GW connects and logs on, but wont load the map area (but communication has now somehow improved!)
- reset to factory and manually duplicated all settings and firewall / port forward settings; GW works flawlessly again

Have compared every setting on every page, and both configs are identical, yet the old settings file does not work;

No idea what the hell has changed since last week on my router, unless somehow the flash memory got scrambled or something (power surge?!?)

Thanks again for the help, guys;

Well I did try Web Africa last night and it did work fine for me...
Glad to hear you sorted it out. Routers are funny things sometimes. I used to have to restart mine every now and then when the connection just seemed to die. Hasn't done it in months though :confused:

Are you always up this late during the week(25-04-2007 02:53 AM), or were you desperate for GW? ;)

strange

thats the strange thing, i did try just restarting it, to no avail; it had to be reset completely in order to work!

As for the hours, insomnias a terrible thing... :(
