Gulf giants in talking with SAA: report

Two United Arab Emirates airlines have held talks with South African Airways about a partnership that it says is needed to revive its business, City Press reported, citing the UAE ambassador to South Africa.

Etihad’s explanation for what went wrong at Alitalia mirrors the Italian airline’s: the turnround was proceeding well until a string of terrorist attacks dented appetite for air travel last year.

Meanwhile, Alitalia’s high cost base simply could not compete with the growing penetration of low-cost carriers in the short- and medium-haul European market.

But if Etihad can blame some factors beyond its control for the flop at Alitalia, it might be hard for it to escape its role in overseeing the airline’s management, particularly Cramer Ball, the Australian chief executive close to Mr Hogan, who is being criticised, especially in Italy, for the failure.
