I didn't know him. Was in the same situation at around the same time too though, was meeting people at parking lots to trying sell my Citi Golf...

I got a sick feeling in my gut when I read this :-( were these guys ever convicted or are they still at large for whatever reason?

Just got another scammer... Same story, same area, different name, different number. It's true, Gumtree is 75% scammers, 20% retailers, 5% actual owners trying to sell or buy something!
Why can't the police just post a stupid add and catch them or make a hotline to send these numbers to? 1) It's entrapment or 2) they loose their part of the cut or 3) they don't know how to use internet or RICA?

The police don't care. Some scammer tried to von me out of a laptop by depositing a stolen cheque into my account. I phoned the bank and they said I should call the police which I did.
I set up the guy so that he could come and meet me and be met by the police to arrest him. But Claremont police station literally told me that they don't enough enough time or officers available to arrest the guy. WTF!

The critical part I would say is this "Elias took the car for a test drive, while Abvajee and Cowley accompanied him". That's not meeting in a public place.

I've been selling a few things on Gumtree/OLX. Nothing major or expensive like cars, some old arbitrary baby stuff.
However, even with that, I meet the prospective buyers at the Estate Security Gate, where their Drivers License and vehicle license are scanned, fingerprints taken and they are on about 8 cameras. When they get past that, I want to see the cash, then they can view the goods.

Was contacted by a guy calling himself Clive Timber ([email protected] 0789573303) His friends cell number: 0786514846
Met his "friend" in greenpoint at BP opposite cubana. Friend looked at the pc, phoned "Clive" and said all was in order with goods. I got an official SMS from FNB saying the money has been deposited into my account. Now im thinking great, seems legit, so i hand over my PC to this guy, shake hands, all happy..
I get home, log in to my online banking, see the money, but its not been cleared...So I email my branch and ask about it. Didn't get an answer from my bank until yesterday, after I got an sms from my bank saying the payment failed. Sick feeling in stomach. The bank asks me to come in to the branch. They look at my account, money is gone.
Apparently this guy deposited a cheque in to an ATM, without filling in any details, BUT he enters my details in to the ATM, so that I get the sms.
I told the bank they need to fix this loophole!..anyways im screwed. Bank cant help me. I go to Police. They said my money is gone, I can open a case but it will take months for anything to happen and I still wont get my money.
I called "Clive" yesterday asking about the cheque, surprisingly he answers his phone, he says he will call his bank and find out. He hasent not gotten back to me and hes ignoring my calls. Im officially scammed.
How can we make these cell numbers more available for people to check? Im even thinking of creating a website with all cell numbers scammers are using..

yea my luck has been horrible lately..was scammed out of 4.5k a few months ago too...Hopefully karma will punish these "people" as it looks like they are getting away without any consequences...
