Gun proposition 'ridiculous'
Craig Lewis, News24 User It's absolutely ludicrous! This is my opinion of the proposition by Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula to disallow South African citizens to purchase any form of self-defence weapon.
I really don't understand the reasoning behind the decision and I suspect there really was very little thinking that went into it at all.
This is yet another example of a high profile leader opening his or her mouth before really thinking of the consequences or inevitable response from the public.
Examples that spring to mind immediately are Minister of Sport and Recreation Mankenkisi Stofile stating at the end of last year that quotas should no longer be applied in sport, Minister of Health, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang's infamous beetroot comments and current ANC president Jacob Zuma's shower comment during his rape trial.
All these comments drew much criticism as they really made no sense at all and caused uproar amongst the general public who felt that their leaders should really take greater consideration before speaking.
Yet once again, Nqakula has proven that our leaders are often focused on impractical methods of policy making instead of really finding appropriate methods of allaying the concerns of the public.
For many, having a weapon on hand at home or in the car is a real source of comfort in this country, where crime is a serious problem. For thousands of women, having pepper spray tucked away in their handbag provides them with some kind of chance at defending themselves when coming face to face with a hijacker or rapist.
So my plea to Nqakula is: Stop taking away the general public's only comfort in this scary world and rather take time to find ways of protecting them because then we might not actually mind having a law of this nature coming into effect.
