Guy claims to be electrician

Just wondering about this guy who when I met him claimed to be an electrician but I saw his father post this to him almost 3 years after the fact.

congrats on passing your trade test. You make me super proud a qualified electrician.

What is this trade test and can you call yourself a electrician without it?Also is 28 years on the old side to only now get this qualification?

No idea what age has to to with it. You can do it at 80.

There are men on this forum who can't even wire a plug who give "expert" advice on things like solar and EVs.

I'd say if this guy sorted your electrical problem/ask, which didn't need s CoC, who cares?

To register with the DoL as an electrician you need:

1. N3 OR Grade 12 (either with certain subjects)
2. Trade test
3. Units standards course
4. Installation rules course, with SANS Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams.

I'm not an electrician, so I haven't done any, but according to the electricians in our environment the Trade Test and Units Standards are the easy parts, with SANS Paper 1 and Paper 2 being the more difficult part.

That said, most qualified electricians (who may write out CoCs) will be happy to have a few people in their teams who passed the Trade test, even if they haven't passed SANS Paper 1 or 2. These people will work as electricians, doing wiring and connections, but they won't be the ones designing the circuits or writing out the CoCs. I'm happy to call them electricians - they do electrical work - but I'll only accept the CoC from a registered person.

He could have been under apprenticeship. Never too late to get educated or accredited. There is a compliance check.

There are 4 categories ,
The appy that does 4 years and comes out of his time ,he can only work on 230v basically house wiring .no DC wiring
The appy that passes trade test can do 220v and 380 volt house and industrial .no DC wiring .
The installation electrician can do all including COC and DC .but not flammable,explosive,hospitals ,.
(MIE can do all including specialized )

I failed my blood test - got an "O", but I still call myself a human.

I got my BSc Cosmology at age 53, does it not count because I am too old?

info is from sans , im a wireman by trade IE and MIE , for an older person refrigeration would be easier , HVAC ,its a very broad field but it can keep you busy , your local tech may run courses , i finished HVAC certs in 1992 allready but its not a formal trade really like electrical, fitter etc , once you have the basics and have gauges and a vacuum pump ,installing kits for retailers can keep you busy , but you will need to get into the click .purchasing gas isnt cheap and is uneconomical to keep all variants , other options are gas installs but you need to do a internship with someone to get certified ,also electric fencing .
