How badly will I dun goof if I buy a GWM Steed5 DC? Seems to be reasonably specced for the price and what a price that is. Anyone here have one and whats the impression?

And no, I don't have 400k for a Toyota/Ford/Mazda/Amarok etc.

Only a few of the Chinese brands are left after the initial flooding and maybe that suggests that it's not to bad?

The reviews that I've been able to find online have been reasonably positive.

Opinions welcome.

It's Ok i have driven my cuz GWM Steed 5 the ride is quite hard but it feels more like an old ISUZU so it should last quite a while

Fader4, unqualified post.

My wife drives the Florid cross. Its cheap, yes, but also so much fun and it looks great and is very economical. Power is awesome for a 1500 and so far in over a year we've had no problems. GWM service is better than any other dealer I've ever dealt with.

My father in law is now on GWM bakkie numbers 5 and 6. The long wheel base 2.2 mpi is used for work, carrying huge loads on a regular basis with 1 ton trailer and the Steed is the family vehicle. He seems to trade them at around 90k km. So far though I'm the most impressed with the Steed as it looks solid, from plastics on the inside to the chassis and amazingly, its the only brand FIL has not been able to destroy.

I'm not saying it holds up to Toyota quality and it only has the basics (I prefer simple over fiddly bits anyway) but it is a worthy contender. Follow the threads on the 4x4community forum regarding the GWM vehicles.

You get what you pay for.

+1

One motoring journalist summed it up when he said your paying the price of what an isuzu cost you 10yrs ago and your getting a car based on an isuzu from 10yrs ago.

Personally I would not have a problem buying a GWM

I should mention that I have some anecdotal evidence of control arm problems or ball joint issues (if memory serves) on some of the earlier models that have the Nissan like front head lights. However, this was for operation in a mining environment so the circumstances may beg for some leniency from the neigh sayers, but not much.

Personally I would not have a problem buying a GWM as they also manufactor Toyota for the Chinese market

Apologies for the double post.

cbrunsdonza, can you elaborate on the statement above?

Paul

Btw, cbrunsdonza: "When the defecation hits the oscillation, run as root!" :-D

Naks, I don't follow the Dakar, however, I understood it is the Havel H5 in the Dakar. Is it the SUV? If so it is likely the Havel as it seems to have replaced the Hover (previous family vehicle of FIL). Speculation from my side though.

This thread is starting to look familiar to one we had about a year ago, or so....one GWM owner frantically defending his car...then we find that the owner is actually a dealer...interesting.

With respect to the original question, I have No Comment, apart from if you are happy with cheap and nasty then go for it. ;)

Flame on! :-P

This is a contentious topic, but we all do love our cars. Personally though, I am considering the Steed 5 for myself. And I deny all allegations of affiliation with GWM... You seriously had a dealer posing as a happy customer? I would've loved to follow that.

It's all here in the archived threads, but I really don't feel like looking for it.

Oops, I feel like a tosser now with my post. I just rechecked my facts and my original source was wrong, its actual FAW who makes Toyota products for China (they use to be a subsidiary of Daihatsu). I was looking into buying a Toyota Avanza at one stage and then found out about Daihatsu being the manufacturer.
