Free weights > machines

Machines can be used incorrectly (as you've proved) and can cause some damage. Free weights too, but IMO with free weights you get the added benefit of exercising your forearms (gripping them and having to keep them up)

You should also actively try to concentrate on the bit of muscle you are trying to exercise. if you can't feel it in your bicep you're doing something wrong. I'd suggest asking for advice with some of the oomies at the gym that does power lifting. i found they helped me a lot (and the personal trainer giving me advice/posture at machines)

Also just FYI, its very important to stretch after weights because your ligaments may start to become bunched up which impairs movement.
Powerlifters know best :D
And good advice on the stretching...after is a must!

Cool thanks for the info's. Now how can I get really staunch really quickly? (without sketchy illegal substances)

Hey there are no quick and easy fixes....eat healthy, up your calorie intake and train hard and smart. Give your body some time to recover and rest and you will grow. The most important thing for me in training is consistency, intensity and perseverance:)

Trees don't grow overnight you knoW :D

Wow but you guys can talk alot of kark :D

The reason that part of you arm is sore:

The Bicep is busy forming. It's a bitch when that happens it it will pretty much drive you to suicide. Make your bicep contract then take your index finger on the other hand and push where the pain is. You will notice it has formed a hole there. Your Bicep is moving upwards to bulk up. If you have never done any weights you will see your Bicep being pretty much straight and flat. A person that has been doing weights will have a round bulky bicep up towards the top part of the arm instead of being one long muscle.

That is why it's hurting there. You are busy forming the bicep to the uper arm. Now this causes some ligament pains, the ligament will be stretched to accomodate the new muscle form. Be prepaired to sit with that SEVERE pain for about 5 days. And it will make you cry by day no 3. But what ever you do, you need to keep going and working the muscle or else you will sit with that same pain again after the pain has gone. And will need to start afresh again.

I know what it feels like and I'm currently having such a great time reading that Pooky is having that pains. You will be crying .... I promise you. That is very very painfull.

You should have taken it easier the first time on the weights.

Recipe for nice biceps - do arm curls with free dumbbells using a standing bench. Do 3 reps of 10, starting with 10kgs and building up every time.

Then lie flat on a bench and do dumbbell lifts - start with maybe 15, also 3 of 10. Do max weight/low reps rather than low weight/high reps for bulk muscle. That will give you good pectoral muscles and triceps.

Bulking up is all about the old school exercises - no fancy machines, just heavy lifting. Calories matter a little but you need to really lift, there is no other way. I have put on a lot of bulk recently - the danger with bulking up is that you also need to be able to take it off because it becomes fat very easily.
