Hey guys

I train at home but very limited with equipment so I'm deciding to start going to a gym (Virgin Active). I can only go in the afternoon since I have no transport, my question is does anyone know like what time in the afternoon is the gym not too full.

I have no one to go with, so I'm abit "nervous" i guess lol.

Depends what area you in... Popular areas are quite full in the afternoon...

nah, its very friendly.. most folks at virgin active talk more than doing training

Well I am in Johannesburg and go to a virgin active, the gym isn't busy before four after four it get really busy until around seven or so.

Probably best to get advice from a trainer, my son operates from Umhlanga http://www.jfitpro.com/ he has a few gyms that he trains clients from that are not too busy.

Thanks for the replies so far :)

@wmurray will contact your son on some info

Best times to go are working hours - from around 10 to 4. I often go over lunch and there's no problem getting equipment.

I wouldn't mind 10-4, at home I train at 3 and I'm so used to it. Can't wait to get my license and car sorted next year.

After 7 sounds good too

what happens before 9 to 7?am

Suring peak hours all the jocks hang out in the gym and make fun of the skinny boys that are testing out the free weights, NOT.

Jocks at the gym are too self-absorbed to look at other people and if you ask them they would be most willing to help you, because it will give them the opportunity to display their knowledge .... if their muscles don't get them enough attention.

See, it's a win for you whether you ignore them or not.

Another thing. Jocks have very good memories. They remember the day they started out with flabby muscles vividly. They'll respect you for just being there.

Very important: Don't start with too heavy weights. You'll just injure yourself. Start with weights that are comfortable and with motions that are very comfortable. Continue with that for weeks if not months before you start swinging weights around like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Great review :o

Lol thanks for that :)

By the way, is anyone here from Durban and go to the gym around Umhlanga side? Wouldn't mind training with you guys

Between 10am and 4pm, and then after 7pm for weekdays. In other words, avoid the 4pm to 7pm time slot. Then weekends are just quiet, Saturday mornings are quieter than Sunday mornings for me. Sunday afternoon is then completely dead.

And if you in Gauteng, don't bother with the 5-6am gym before work.. It never works expect for early winter.

Generally I find that going evenings in the last hour to be the best especially in winter

There are 3 Virgin Actives in that general area La Lucia, Gateway and Mt Edgecombe, perhaps check how busy they are during the time you want to go...

The nice thing is, with your hours you can join with the off-peak membership and save some money.
