if I encode my DVD rips with h.264 for higher quality... will they still play on my MviX player? as AVI files?

I am using Fair Use Wizard.

From what I can tell....No.

You'll just have to pump up the bitrate to get better quality.

H264 is a different codec to XviD and DivX. You will need a player which
can handle it, this usually means that the device will need a more powerful
processor and will need the code to decode H264.

I should also mention that H264 comes in different flavours,
there is BaseLine Profile at different Levels 0-3 - where the iPod/iPhone
can only handle limited bitrate BP at L0 or maybe L1.
There is also Main Profile and High Profile with various other
things thrown in like QPEL motion estimation and B-frames.

Most HW players on the market can only handle BP and some
advanced ones handle Main Profile but not HP.

ok, thanks guys. I ask cos I notice sometimes I get "streaking" in the video when I just use the normal XviD codec. Not artefacts, not washout... but it actually looks like the pixels have been streaked across the edges of the object.

I'll stick with the XviD codec though, cos I watch everything through the MviX.

XviD is the second best codec, after H264. It has the best quality for given file size, even a little better than DivX.
