Hacked

What is to be done about this then? My parents are having their bandwith sapped over at their house and I'm no computer wiz. I'll go and change the router pass aswell in a bit for now.

Change the router password, change the account password (ISP) and remember to update the router with the new account password, or you won't be able to connect.

Who would go through all the effort of spoofing mac address etc... for a 1gig account ? :\

I agree, unless it's your neighbour. Plus remember they don't know what size the account is - for them it's the luck of the draw :(

Sure your folks don't have spyware or their pc hasn't been hijacked and is part of a botnet sending out viagra ads and hosting porn?

Maybe check that first.

I don't really have to worry about our wifi getting hacked, I live on a farm and it's almost 1.5km to the nearest building, I bet my router isn't that good, lol. :p
Doesn't have to be your router thats good... We were installing a system at my Dads farm the other day and used a really decent panel to connect two of his buildings. Out of interests sake we turned the thing all around to see if there was anything in the area and picked up his nieghbours router, who is about 2 km away.

Ironically I scanned the networks at my house the other day and found a weak signal but it was encrypted.. Typed in "password" as the password.. and it opened up.. some people are just born stupid.

Hi guys
Thanks for all the advice,
lilGR.... I really dont know if I've been hacked, I lost 4gig of cap, Telkom told me that they could see another port had accessed my pc, they could not give this info to me, I had to open an case with SAPS, SAPS would obtain court order to get info from telkom ect ect ect.
i was logged onto one account, and my other two accounts where used at the same time. hey I dunno how this works, now I change my passwords everyday and switch my router off and unplug when not in use.

As a last resort, you could ask your ISP to lock your port. That means that no matter if they have all your authentication details, they won't be able to connect.

New problems may arise though as ADSL ports are infamous for their unreliability, especially after power cuts, which means that you will need to get your port lock updated with your ISP should you get your port reset by Telkom after reporting lack of connectivity.

you can also change your routed connection to a bridge connection and by default you cant have more than one simultaneous connection on a login/password

Or you have a telkom techie go down and switch ports and you cant connect yourself anymore... At leas WA is quick with fixing that for you

That will not stop someone using your username+password on their own router...Useless IMO

Good luck.

Just some more of my two cents. How'd they get both accounts ? Do you use 'bridged mode' or 'always on' on your router? , Cos if you reconnect on your other account your ip changes and in change they should have to specifically find your new ip which would be near impossible to do and hack you again, Have you been to any lans or do you keep your account info in a textfile? Could you be vulnerable to someone getting hold of the textfile ?

In terms of section 86 (1) (2) of the electronic and communications and transmissions act (act 25 of 2002) and more specifically with regards to bandwidth theft is a criminal act and people who make themselves guilty of this will be arrested and prosecuted.

In the past there hadn't been any control over it, but this is coming to an end very soon. Please see the quote:

"I got this off myadsl.co.za... Just thought id share with you..

Here is the story:

Hey I just wanted to let u guys out there know that you can and will get busted. I was a firm believer that there was no real law against bandwith theft and that the police is too lazy to do anything.

But I was wrong, today I had 6 cops at my door with a search warrant, I glady let them in as bandwith theft had not crossed my mind.

I was told that I had controviened section 86 (1) (2) of the electronic and communications and transmissions act (act 25 of 2002) which in basic terms refers to bandwith theft. I stay in Johannesburg and these police officers came all the way from cape town they also had a seargant from the sandton police station with them. They explained to me that this is a new section of the police which was formed in 2002 and in cape town because most main isp servers are located there.

Anyway I know that I have used other peoples accounts occasionally, which isnt right and unacceptable. Anyway the account I used was reported to the police in November 2006, it took them 10 months to get my information from telkom. They told me that their unit is growing because of the increase in adsl users as well as the increase of adsl account theft.

They explained my 2 options.

1.) Is admition of guilt, this will involve admitting to the crime this will include paying a fine, recieving a criminal record and the seizure of my pc (which wont be used in anyway and just kept as assurance untill I have paid the fine)

2.) Is denying involvement in the crime in which I would need to appear in court in cape town. For this option the search warrant comes in hand in which they have the right to seize any computer, harddrives, devices which are connected to a network point or not, computer storage devices such as flash drives, dvd's, tapes, documents, hard copies, software or devices such as palmtops, cell phones, i-pods, laptops, notebooks, adsl router, "skype" peripherals, telkom devices or any other devices that may reflect the following username.... . That didn't sound like a good option because I knew I was guilty, they could take whatever and I would probably never see it again plus I would be fined for every single account in my posession. I didn't have any accounts saved anywhere, only on the internet but this option is not even feasible if you aren't guilty.

So this is just a warning to all adsl "hackers" (can't even call it hacking coz its so noob) but anyway just dont do it. We all know that telkom is to blame for high prices but it doesnt justify the crime.

I know many people will say serves u right bla bla and that I'm only saying this because I got caught. But u know ur right, I know its retarded to steal bandwith its just the same as bribing a metro cop and its just as bad for the economy people just lack basic ethics. Some lack ethics some are greedy some are both, like me I have a 10gb cap but I still did it.

This post serves as a contribution to the community to help reduce bandwith theft. I just hope this serves as a wake up call for many that thing they can't get busted. I got caught for an account I used last year about 10 months ago. So if you're using a hacked account now u might just get caught next year april.

UPDATE: Well I have paid the fine now and have gotten my pc back, I also found out that there is no criminal record because I was not sentenced in court.

I wont stipulate how much the fine is, all I can say is don't do it. And I am in jhb."

Snap! Fine of R5k

UPDATE
Hi, ok so I opened a case on Saterday, today the Commercial Crime Unit phoned me, they applied for a Sect 205 warrant to get the info from Telkom, once they get the info they hand everything over to the Technical Support Unit where the Cyber Crime Unit takes over. Apparently they have a 100% success rate.:D I will keep this thread informed right up to the court case.
