Out of curiosity, what are legal remifications of hacking into someone's personal computer? Is that not akin to breaking and entering? What if you were able to save a relatively detailed log of the events that transpired during the hacking incident ie. registry modifications, IP/DHCP changed etc?

Its invasion of privacy, as far as I know you could lay a charge against them if its malicious.

Post the log, lets have a look.

It's a pretty long log. Over 6Mb for a couple minutes worth of activity. Is there any section in particular or keywords I should look up? Here is part of it.

In particular I am curious about remote access because specifically configured my registry to prohibit remote connections. Whoever this person is did something to prevent me from connecting to the internet throug my iburst and it's irritating me because I am trying to put together a website which requires constant net access. I can't check my mail, do my banking, and it's been keeping me distracted for days now. I can't do much until I have secured my internet connection.

Just to add to there, there appear to be some registry entries that aut-enable the default admin, remote access, change my DNS server and configure a static IP. They also set my BitDefender firewall disabled which means that the moment I connect to the net whoever this is automatically has access.

I would have thought so too but this happened after a clean install of Windows 7. I noticed that roaming profiles keep on being activated inspite me explicitly prohitbiting this in my group policies. How do I lock my registry so that it cannot be editted without my consent? I get the feeling that whoever/whatever is hacking me is using my administrator credentials to do this in the background while I am not aware.

To be very honest, iBurst is a hacker's playground. I constantly was either Dos'ed or subject to repeated intrusion attempts.

I always figured that since it's a terminal like a cellphone with no MAC address it was one of the more difficult internet connections to penetrate. I'm not convinced. In the several years I've had my iBurst I've never been hacked and I've lived in neighbourhoods with numerous iBurst users.

I always figured that since it's a terminal like a cellphone with no MAC address ...

Sorry, what? Do you know how this "internet" thing actually works? I guess I should just say go read up on the actual PPPoE protocol, then come back with some useful comments.

it was one of the more difficult internet connections to penetrate.

Cf. previous comments, and understand that one firmware bug is all it might take. But that's probably irrelevant anyhow.

You seem to have met this thing called the "internet". Hi. Welcome. It's a pretty cool thing. There's people on it from everywhere. Good and bad people. The baddies will try to do stuff to your computers, so it's up to you to take adequate precautions to keep your stuff safe. That's not so bad, right? It's like how you lock up your house at night, or have a security alarm or tracker unit on your car. Just in case, you know.

Moral of the story: whatever you see has *nothing* to do with iBurst. Nor should they really have to concern themselves with it. They sell a service. What you do with that service is your problem.

Yeah, really.. if you get hacked you're a f-ken idiot, use a NAT router and an OS that isn't full of exploits. When Lulzsec hacked Sony it wasn't Lulzsec fault that it happened, it was Sonys. Blaming iBurst is like blaming your nearest petrol station for having a car accident.

Also, botnets sweep entire IP ranges for exploitable hosts and run the exploits and brute force attacks automatically. No one is targeting you until they see you're weak.

I would have thought so too but this happened after a clean install of Windows 7...

Master Boot Record Rootkits can effectively bypass removal done by formatting and re-installing of windows. Clear your MBR before during reinstall next time.

NAT routers are great for those that don't know much about security.

Botnets hit everyones router every couple of minutes. Port scans mostly from worms on the network or the Chinese :D. It's only your fault if they get in. If you don't have a NAT router, ensure that your firewall rules are strict.

It's a pretty long log. Over 6Mb for a couple minutes worth of activity. Is there any section in particular or keywords I should look up? Here is part of it.

I never accused iBurst of anything. If anything, my mentioning iBurst wireless was a commendment on them being somewhat more difficult to hack than most internet connections.
