Hacking through WIFI: what is possible?

Yes but.. Not everyone wants to share. I've found some build up this silly ego thing about it. Self-righteous grin and tell me to learn myself. I'm too daft to learn on my own. Wanna be shown and ask questions

True, I've been though that myself over the years and had to teach myself and I am glad I did, you really need to have a hands on experience and learn the tools and use it right and for the right reasons () or you'll land yourself in heaps of trouble.
Always 'hack in house' as they say.

Goto youtube and search for what you want to know. There are many howto videos out there.
You can always goto video podcast sites too, not just youtube. Eg. hak5.org.

Oh gosh, you had That smile on your face when you typed this huh? :)

Very interesting discussion going on here. It's amazing the stuff people can do with a bit of know-how and some time.

Back to the OP, check this video from DEFCON on how easily they can hack most home ADSL routers (some techniques you have to visit a site that they set up, but others they can directly hack you). Might be a bit dated now, but very interesting.

There's probably a good reason they don't share too freely because people will get themselves in trouble in no time.

I think it's because most have learnt themselves and put hours and hours into it...so why should they just give it away when the exact same avenue is available to everyone else?

I specifically don't offer to teach anyone because I learned myself and if someone were to start asking me questions I'm not sure I would give all the right answers.

Exactly. As with anything in life. Every person is going to have his/her own way of doing things, his/her own tools and these tools and information takes time to acquire and learn. Sharing this right and left to anyone and that person uses the tools without knowing what he/she is actually doing, is why we tend to frown upon it. Someone who has the tools and uses the tools without the proper knowledge is what we call a 'script kiddie'.

The tools are everywhere and it's that search you'll have to make to find the right tools to use that will teach you more.

You can go back to old videos of hacks/exploits and still find them in the wild. You'll be surprised how lazy people are in upgrading/replacing stuff and that leaves then vulnerable.

Like I say I'm VERY amateur with this. I did some security training and then went on a rampage for a few weeks before settling down.

I can easily get to plain-text information on the same network but when it comes to intercepting secure traffic and spoofing certificates and the like I'm a little lost and frankly not THAT interested.

To me most of the fun is actually the non-hacking stuff where you've already got a little bit of information and then manually construct the rest of it like a puzzle.

InfoSec is just a hobby for me, I'm a normal IT technician (working at an aiport :D), I'll always consider my self a noob :p no matter how much I learn.

If you are seriously interested you'll want to look at doing the CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker courses but be warned it is one the hardest exams in IT.

CEH unfortunately can only be done though a registered company.

You also need to be a little bit off your rocker...every single CEH or aspiring CEH I know is a bit of a whack job.

Crazy.. who me ...
Hehe

The deeper you go into InfoSec... the more paranoid you get
"Down the rabit whole you go.."

If your neighbor wants to use your Wi-Fi and you have WPS enabled he will have your WPA/WPA2 passphrase in less than 8 hours with reaver-wps...

If, lets say you neighbor's router is in the room close to your house and your on the same side close to his/her room. You can use reaver to get the key in couple of minutes if your lucky, but it has gotten harder with newer firmware etc to crack. Don't ask me how I know
