Hahnel Triad 80 Tripod

does not look sturdy to me
I put my camera on something like this at the shop
I put the 10sec timer on and watched the tripod
when the shutter went the tripod shook
haha

I prefer ball heads though, which is why this one caught my eye. I've emailed a few online shops asking them for a recommendation - my main concern is weight, the 50D + 50-500mm is not a light combination.

It only supports 2.5kg, safely you could probably go to about 2kg before the camera and lens starts to sag.

I have found that the tripods with built in heads are almost useless for holding larger lenses. I have the Manfrotto 055XPROB (http://www.orms.co.za/product.php?a=view&product=1353) with the 488RC2 ballhead (http://www.orms.co.za/product.php?a=view&product=554) It has no problems with a 50d, grip, 100-400 and 1.4x tc. When I got mine I went into Orms with my camera and a couple of lenses to try out various combinations of tripods and heads.

Just a note, the tripod mentioned above comes with a replaceable head, I've asked, and made sure, the head is replaceable, and can be replaced with a Manfrotto head.

Usually the head just screws off, leaving you with a 3/8" screw stud. You can then use any head with a 3/8" female thread. If the tripod has a 1/4" screw thread, you can get a 1/4" to 3/8" adaptor. Most Manfrotto heads come with these adaptors as standard.

That's why I take my K1000 when shopping for tripods - if that doesn't shake it, nothing will :)

The one you link appears to have one of those mini ball-heads on, so it looks replaceable. See if it has a hook to weigh it down - that really helps.

That's why I like choose the Gitzo. If your head has the wrong thread, you can unscrew the top of the legs and turn the screw around.
 
Whats the easiest way to check for stability? A light lens, or a heavy lens, camera settings, etc?

Maybe I'll walk over today with my gear.

Put your heaviest lens (preferably one with a tripod collar) on the camera, mount it on the tripod, then tap the lens (or the tripod) gently while looking through the viewfinder. If you have any movement in your image, the tripod is not too good. The ideal is a tripod with vibration damping built in.

The Hahnel Triad 80 Tripod is available at a camera store for R799 <-- not sure if that is the right price, but its what they quoted, and said I can have it at.

Seems quite sturdy, and a decent cheap tripod, nice and heavy too :)

For what its worth one of the guys in my class has a Hahnel Triad 80 Tripod and our lecturer just used it to show us a large format camera and it seems to be holding it fine.

I need a new tripod (current one too weak) and I think I'll be looking at:

Seeing this [massive] thread resurrection made me realise I still dont have a respectable tripod. Even my monopod is held together with aftermarket rivets, electrical tape and more than a little bit of luck.

I wonder if the OP ever got the Hahnel in question?
 
Yeh - I haven't had much time to practice with my camera - didn't realise buying a house would be so much work :(

I took it out for the first time in a few months this weekend (we were going away) only to discover all three batteries were flat.
