Halo 3 is all the rage with many experts predicting that its popularity is pivotal to Microsoft’s continued success in the console wars between the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3.
Halo 3 is widely regarded as the biggest game launch in history, and with Microsoft fuelling the hype with its special edition Halo 3 Xbox 360, the company is banking heavily on the success of this game.
Halo 3 is expected to smash gaming sales records when it hits the shelves – something that will strengthen Microsoft’s position in the console wars.
“Halo 3 is vitally important for the Xbox 360, which is important for Microsoft as a conduit into the living room,” said Billy Pidgeon, game industry analyst for IDC Group. “It will certainly drive adoption of the console. There are gamers who have been waiting for Halo 3 to come out to buy a 360.”
“With its big guns and corny sci-fi plot, the Halo video game series is undeniably the province of the teenage boy, yet it has become one of the most lucrative entertainment franchises of all time,” says the Telegraph in the UK.
New Xbox 360 console
Earlier news that the new Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition Console from Microsoft – sporting a Spartan green and gold finish – had arrived at a price of USD 399-00 made many gaming enthusiasts happy.
According to the Xbox 360 website, the gaming console features an exclusive “Spartan green and gold” finish and comes bundled with a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, 20GB Hard Drive, Headset, Play & Charge Kit, and exclusive Halo 3 Gamer Pics and Theme.”
But there’s even more on offer. There are also Halo 3 Special Edition Zunes, Halo 3 Special Edition Wireless Headsets, Todd McFarlane Limited Edition Halo 3 Controllers and more.
Microsoft most likely does not bank too heavily on the success of these special edition add-ons, but rather Halo 3’s success as a game and its knock-on effect on Xbox 360 sales.
This view is shared by the Telegraph: “The importance of Halo to Microsoft (the games are not available on rival consoles) is not in flat sales alone. People bought the console specifically to play Halo; and, Bill Gates will be praying, people will upgrade to the Xbox 360, the machine’s latest incarnation, to play Halo 3.”
Halo 3 goes on sale next week.
