Hallo gents,

I'm upgrading from nothing... to DSL. My current situation is, I stay in an adjacent cottage where my landlord currently has internet (DSL presumably - just not sure what speed etc yet). I'm looking at getting an uncapped con, but should he agree that means we will be sharing a line unless I decide to pay for my own line, correct? Which splits the bandwidth between whatever he's busy with and whatever I wanna do? (I'm just guessing here, correct me at any point). Thus if I'm looking for a 4mb uncapped connection and lets say he's got a 512kb through telkom already, i will be limited to his line speed which makes it in my best interest to rent a line?

Continuing with that train of thought, can you please give me your recommendations on ISP's. I'm keen on openweb mainly coz of what I've heard through a friend or 2 but open minded to hear other verdicts.

thanks
d

You have basically two options to look at:

Leech of your landlord's line (and pay part of his line) or do your own thing.

The above would be a good option unless he will be hogging valuable speed, since it would save you some money.

Phone line: R140pm (compulsory)
1Mb line R289 or 4Mb line R413 (iirc).
OW 1Mb gold (R449pm) or OW 4Mb gold (R738)

If your landlord has a 512 line or whatever, offer to pay for the upgrade, then you share the pricing on that and the phoneline, dependent on the phone usage.

ISP wise, it's up to you, but from experience I'd also suggest Openweb. Which one you choose is dependent on your usage.... Gold is absolutely wonderful.

Cool, awesome and thanks for the response. Just needed to know i was on the right track here :)

Since your sharing the line get a 1mg line openweb gold. It should be about R800 all inclusive or mweb which is cheaper and also reliable thise those are basicly your only options. Don't go for the cheap uncapped accounts like web africa and afrihost.

eeek. okay stupid question. even though im staying on a property that already has a landline installed, do i need to pay R140p/m for another landline? do they actually physically add another line to this address? seems like a bit of a rip off -.- you already pay a dsl line rental..

Yes, you do. It's just how Telkom rolls :)

Good evening, you could also trial an MWEB account and make up your mind before signing up? If your interested, please DM me your contact details and we will assist in setting it up..

ugh. okay, sorry to be a pest.. one last one (i hope :erm:) but do you know what the general experience is for Imaginet? They seem a lot cheaper than Openweb... but possibly because you get what you pay for? any verdicts or verdicts via mates?
