I've got a still very decent handsaw that I've had for years and looked after properly, but it's starting to lose it's edge (literally). It needs sharpening. I remember from Way Back When that you used to get sharpening tool sets: a guide to put onto the blade of the saw with the angle adjusted to the saw teeth, and a diamond file to sharpen the hardened steel edge of the teeth. (Note that technically this isn't honing; the latter generally refers to finishing a sharp edge, typically by metal displacement rather than grinding. But what's in a name.)

I've Googled quite a bit but you don't seem to get those anymore. I've seen them for chain saw teeth but not for hand saws.

Does anyone know if these are still available and where?

If you are based in Cape Town there is a company in Wynberg that specialises in tool sharpening and blade sharpening they should be able to sort it for you.

Nope - I'm in KZN. But thanks for the suggestion - I'll look for companies around here that might be able to do the same.

You don't need to go that in depth or require fancy tools

Thanks, I'll give that a go. However I note that the saws sharpened here are not inductively hardened, as most hand saws nowadays are. So a regular file won't cut it (literally).

Aah ok. In that case Paul basically recommends buying a new saw because they are relatively cheap compared to proper woodworking saws and given the effort and marginal gains you are gonna get  you will need a diamond file:
Something like this:

This.

Even having it professionally sharpened might cost as much as a new one.

Its been a while since I did it but there are places that are reasonable and will straighten and sharpen the teeth.
If you looked after the saw just sharpening by hand might be fine.
