Have you thought of applying for a job in the Peoples Republic of China? Sounds like you would be ideal for a government position there.

From this I deduce that you are either:
a) a student with a lot of holidays
b) working for the state and you get 30+ days annual leave every year
c) a business owner and getting fed up with giving your staff off while you work public holidays

That being said, I do think we have too many public holidays in SA...

Am I correct in saying that the US has a gazillion national holidays, but you don't necessarily get off work? You choose 5 or something each year and you can take those off (that's why Thanksgiving is very popular because it always falls on a Friday, so you always have a long weekend if you pick that one to take leave).
 
I am an atheist so Christmas doesn't carry any religious significance to me but I do consider it a time to spend with family and i get involved in the gift giving and gorging on delicious food.

I like Christmas.

I do however see the point. The government and the church are separate so perhaps the government shouldn't be recognising religious holidays. Would be sad to see Christmas and Good Friday holidays go though. :(

See, you get what I'm saying...screw public holidays. Nobody really cares about the reason they are celebrated anyway...it is just a good excuse to do nothing for a day.

Works for me. I'll even be happy with a terrible excuse to do nothing for a day.

Eish, next someone will be calling for reducing a weekend to only Sunday afternoon.

That's how it rolls in Cape Town - if you want production and money move to Jo'burg, we'll stick with the beaches, semi-Mondays and mellow Fridays.

Not a bad idea I suppose. Then we all still get our family time and holiday season and it doesn't have to be recognised as inherently religious.

Reconciliation Day is only on the 16th because it used to be the Day of the Vow and Heritage Day is not in September for any particular reason that I am aware of. I would have no problem with moving either one. Perhaps some people might object. I don't know why but it would be nice to hear from others.

It means 2 fewer public holidays but if it means we get to keep the December festive season holidays then that is better than nothing.

Still I can't help but think other religions are going to start demanding that other public holidays get moved to the dates for their religious celebrations. At the end of the day it still means the Christians get their holy day off while other religions don't. Meh who knows.
 
Just call all the holidays, off-day or something generic and let everyone do on the day as they see fit.
