I have an 2.5 laptop hard disk hat shows 80gig size. I have formatted it and now shows no files.

If I however check the properties it shows:

Used space: 96 530 432 bytes 92.0 MB (no files show when accessed)
Free space: 79 927 611 392 bytes 74.4 GB

Capacity: 80 024 141 824 bytes 74.5 GIG

is this normal or is there lost space somewhere, about 5 GIG if show how do I recover it

Yes, it is normal, because the FAT (file allocation table) takes up that much space.

The 80GB (80 000 000 000 bytes) drive has roughly 74.5GiB space, because 1 GB is 1000 * 1000 * 1000 bytes, where as 1 GiB is 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes

Divide the 80 024 141 824 bytes \ 1024 = 78148576 kilobytes \1024 = 76316 megabytes \1024 = 74.52 gigabytes...

You have the correct amount of space.
