Perhaps I'm just blond today but am using a freecom hd to store some files.
backed up my pc to it and suddenly the files were gone
hard drive still says the space is being used, but cant seem to access the files
have done a checkdsk /r and still nothing
any advice?

Try using "*.*" without quotes in the search area but if that doesn't work, enable hidden files and folders.

Tools > Folder Options > Views then post back if it worked. :)

Hi I've tried both of those and hidden files are enabled, but still nothing.
Was wondering if the files on the drive were perhaps fat32, as the drive seems to be ntfs?
Or am i just on a totally wrong path here?

And uncheck the option that says system hidden files.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm a bit desperate here. know the files must be there but nothing on the hd when i open it?

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials a run a full scan.
Download MalwareBytes anti-malware and run a full scan as well.

Same thing, dude. There is distinct difference between hidden files and system hidden files (protected operating system files).

Hehehehe :p

Anyway, if he finds it after disabling hide protected operating system files , then he must browse in command prompt to the folder and run the following:

attrib -H -S *.* /S /D

So it's a permissions issue?

If it was caused by some viruses yes, the files are changed to have a permanent (system) hidden attribute, meaning you are unable to untick the Hidden box under Attributes under the folders/documents properties.

If I had a R for every flash drive I have had to fix with this...
